Background & Biography
Albert Wenger is a partner at Union Square Ventures (USV). Before joining the firm, he was president of del.icio.us through its sale to Yahoo and invested as an angel in companies including Etsy and Tumblr. His work spans technology investing and writing about the economic consequences of technological change.
Wenger graduated from Harvard College in economics and computer science and holds a doctorate in Information Technology from MIT. He is the author of The World After Capital and writes the blog Continuations.
His role changed in emphasis in October 2026. USV’s announcement of its next chapter named a new core investment team and said Wenger would continue supporting the firm and its portfolio companies. The firm’s current biography lists him as a partner. He should therefore not be described as a member of the newly announced core investment team or assigned the older managing-partner title without newer confirmation.
Notable Contributions
Wenger’s direct connection to crypto includes USV’s investment in Blockstack and his writing about Bitcoin-linked applications. In January 2017, he announced that USV had led a new funding round for Blockstack, which the firm had first backed under the name Onename. He described the project’s use of open protocols built around Bitcoin to support decentralized naming and applications.
In December 2020, Wenger discussed Stacks 2.0 and its attempt to connect smart-contract functionality with Bitcoin through Proof of Transfer. The essay disclosed that USV held STX tokens and equity in Hiro at that time. These are dated investment and commentary records, not evidence that Wenger personally designed the protocol or that the 2020 description is a complete account of the network today.
His contribution is best understood as helping finance and explain emerging infrastructure. Claims about decentralization, security or commercial success still need to be tested against the particular system and its current implementation.
Why Katharos.ai Follows Albert Wenger
Katharos.ai follows Wenger because his work links investment decisions with questions about who controls digital infrastructure. Blockchain projects often promise to reduce dependence on centralized platforms. His historical writing helps explain why investors considered that possibility important and what kinds of applications they hoped it would enable.
That perspective is useful alongside technical and user evidence. A funding announcement can establish investor involvement; it does not by itself show that a protocol is secure, that a token is fairly priced or that an application has achieved durable adoption.
Areas to Follow
- Wenger’s public analysis of open protocols and decentralized applications. - The relationship between Bitcoin infrastructure and application-layer innovation. - How venture capital and token ownership affect governance and incentives. - Evidence of user control, practical adoption and sustainable business models. - His continuing support for USV and its portfolio companies after the 2026 team change.
