Background & Biography
Brad Burnham is a co-founder and partner at Union Square Ventures (USV) and a venture partner at Placeholder. His work connects technology investing with the development of open networks and crypto infrastructure.
Burnham began his information-technology career at AT&T in 1979. He spun Echo Logic out of Bell Laboratories in 1989, joined AT&T Ventures in 1993 and co-founded TACODA in 2001. In 2003, he and Fred Wilson created USV. He studied political science at Wesleyan University.
His current role needs an important qualification. In October 2026, USV announced a new core investment team and said Burnham would continue supporting the firm and its portfolio companies. USV’s profile still lists him as a partner, but he should not be presented as part of that newly announced core investment team. Placeholder separately identifies him as a venture partner, rather than one of the partners who manage the firm.
Notable Contributions
Burnham has articulated investment arguments for blockchain-based infrastructure in his own published writing. In a May 2017 USV essay, he disclosed the firm’s equity investment in Protocol Labs in late 2016 and discussed the relationship between open protocols, shared data infrastructure and token-based financing. That is evidence of investment involvement and a stated thesis, not authorship of IPFS or Filecoin.
His 2019 “3Box Thesis” described why user-controlled data could support new applications and announced Placeholder’s investment in the company. Later that year, his essay on Zerion used decentralized-finance interfaces to discuss the difference between applications that share an accessible financial infrastructure and services that keep users within a closed platform.
These writings are historical investor perspectives. Their expectations about adoption, token economics or the benefits of decentralization are not guarantees of returns or proof that every project achieved its aims.
Why Katharos.ai Follows Brad Burnham
Katharos.ai follows Burnham for his role in funding and explaining open-network businesses. His work helps frame a practical question in digital assets: how can infrastructure remain broadly accessible while supporting the teams that build and maintain it?
His experience also connects earlier internet business models with blockchain investment. That comparison is useful when evaluating whether a new protocol changes users’ control over data, creates a workable business, or merely replaces one intermediary with another.
Areas to Follow
- Financing models for open-source protocols and decentralized infrastructure. - User control over data and access across different applications. - The distinction between investment in a company and ownership of a network token. - Burnham’s published views and his continuing roles at USV and Placeholder. - Evidence of adoption, governance and sustainable operation beyond fundraising announcements.
Reporting Scope
Coverage should distinguish Burnham’s own analysis from the activities of either investment firm. A firm-level investment should not automatically be attributed to him personally. Historical essays should retain their dates, and forecasts should not be restated as current facts.
His investment affiliations are relevant context for commentary on portfolio companies. This profile does not recommend a fund, token or investment strategy. Inclusion is editorial and does not imply a partnership, endorsement or advisory relationship with Burnham, USV or Placeholder.
Areas of Influence Category
Investment & Founders is the primary category, reflecting Burnham’s co-founding of USV and his investment work in open networks and crypto infrastructure. This profile remains unranked.
Current Position
