Background & Biography
Casey Reas is a Los Angeles-based artist, professor and chair of UCLA’s Department of Design Media Arts. He also co-directs UCLA Social Software with Lauren Lee McCarthy and is a co-founder of Feral File, a platform for exhibiting and collecting digital art.
Reas creates software-based artworks as well as installations, prints and drawings. His digital-asset relevance includes both his own tokenised generative art and his work on a platform that uses blockchain records in collecting and distributing art. Those activities sit within a longer career in creative coding that began before contemporary NFT markets.
Notable Contributions
Reas and Ben Fry started Processing in 2001 as an open-source programming language and environment for visual work. In 2012, they established the Processing Foundation with Dan Shiffman. The project’s current history states that all three stepped down from active project-lead roles in 2023. Reas is therefore described here as a co-founder, not as Processing’s current lead or sole developer.
Processing is not a blockchain protocol. Its relevance to this profile lies in the tools and educational community surrounding code-based art. This history helps distinguish the practice of making generative images from the later use of tokens to distribute or collect particular works.
Reas co-founded Feral File with technologist Sean Moss-Pultz in 2020. The platform traces its roots to a2p, an artist-to-artist experiment in exchanging digital works and recording provenance. Feral File subsequently developed curated exhibitions and tools for presenting computational art. Its own account describes blockchain as part of how it records rights and relationships between artists and collectors; that description should not be treated as a guarantee that every contractual right is automatically enforced on-chain.
In March 2026, Reas and Feral File collaborated with Art Blocks on Ex Nihilo (Cosmos). Art Blocks identifies a fixed edition of 256 unique, interactive and animated works, released on 10 March. The project belongs to Reas’s Still Life series and uses the dodecahedron as a starting point for images generated through code. This is a concrete example of his current participation in tokenised generative art, rather than merely an association with the broader digital-art field.
Feral File’s accompanying Ex Nihilo exhibition combines that generative series with five plotter drawings minted through its platform. The presentation connects software, physical drawing and blockchain-based collecting without making those media interchangeable.
Why Katharos.ai Follows Casey Reas
Katharos.ai follows Reas for the connection between creative tools, education and the institutions through which digital art circulates. His work makes it possible to ask how a generative system becomes an artwork, what a collector receives and how software-based works can remain accessible over time.
Token ownership, image access, copyright and preservation are separate questions. A blockchain record may document an edition or transaction while the work’s execution still depends on code, hardware or other services. Coverage of Reas and Feral File can help explain those distinctions through specific projects rather than broad claims about the value of NFTs.
Current Research & Education
UCLA’s current faculty page identifies Reas as a professor and Social Software co-director, while its 2026–27 departmental leadership list confirms his chair role. The Smithsonian American Art Museum also lists him as a 2025–2026 artist research fellow. His fellowship project concerns visual scores and diagrams as ways of developing software artworks before implementation in code.
These research and teaching roles extend beyond cryptocurrency. Neither university affiliation nor a museum fellowship constitutes endorsement of a token, marketplace or investment.
Areas to Follow
- Generative artworks and the code that produces them. - Edition structure, artist rights and collector responsibilities. - Long-term display and preservation of computational art. - Open-source creative tools and access to technical education. - Curated digital exhibitions and their use of blockchain records.
Reporting Scope
Founding roles are distinguished from current operational responsibilities. Joint work is attributed to collaborators, and platform descriptions are not treated as independent guarantees of security or enforceability. This profile makes no claim about current prices, returns, liquidity or the financial merits of collecting a work.
Inclusion is editorial and does not imply endorsement, partnership or an advisory relationship with Reas, UCLA, Feral File, Processing or Art Blocks.
Areas of Influence Category
Community, Media & Education is the primary category, reflecting Reas’s artistic and educational work. Investment & Founders reflects his co-founding of Feral File. This profile remains unranked.
Current Position
Artist; Professor and Chair, UCLA Design Media Arts; Co-Director, UCLA Social Software; Co-Founder, Feral File.
