Background & Biography
Dan Schulman is chief executive officer of Verizon, a role he took up in October 2025. His relevance to digital assets comes from his earlier leadership of PayPal, where cryptocurrency services and a US-dollar stablecoin launched during his tenure. His present telecommunications role should be distinguished from that historical payments work.
Schulman served as PayPal’s president and CEO from 2015 to 2023. Alex Chriss succeeded him as CEO in September 2023, and Schulman left PayPal’s board at the end of that year. He is therefore described here as a former PayPal executive, not as a current decision-maker at the payments company.
His earlier career included roles at AT&T, Priceline, Virgin Mobile USA and American Express. He joined Verizon’s board in 2018 before becoming its chief executive. Verizon’s biography lists a bachelor’s degree from Middlebury College and an MBA in finance from New York University’s Stern School of Business.
Notable Contributions
During Schulman’s CEO tenure, PayPal announced a service in October 2020 allowing eligible US customers to buy, hold and sell cryptocurrency through their PayPal accounts. The initial offering covered bitcoin, ether, bitcoin cash and litecoin, with infrastructure supplied through a partnership with Paxos. This placed access to selected digital assets inside an established consumer payments interface.
PayPal launched Checkout with Crypto in March 2021. The feature enabled eligible US customers to use their cryptocurrency balances to fund purchases by converting those holdings into fiat currency at checkout. That distinction matters: the announcement did not mean that every participating merchant directly received cryptocurrency or managed a crypto wallet.
In August 2023, PayPal announced PayPal USD, or PYUSD. At launch, the dollar-denominated stablecoin was issued by Paxos Trust Company and structured as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. Schulman was still PayPal’s CEO when it was introduced. His documented contribution is executive leadership during these launches, not sole authorship of their technology, issuance arrangements or regulatory work.
Why Katharos.ai Follows Dan Schulman
Katharos.ai follows Schulman for his connection to the adoption of digital assets by an established payments provider. The sequence from buying and holding cryptocurrency to checkout conversion and then a branded stablecoin illustrates different ways that payment companies can connect digital assets with familiar financial services.
These developments also make clear that a payment interface, a token issuer and a blockchain network can perform different functions within one product. Keeping those responsibilities separate is important when assessing industry claims.
Areas to Follow
- His public reflections on digital payments and financial-service access. - The historical development of PayPal’s cryptocurrency services during his leadership. - The distinction between executive responsibility, technical development and stablecoin issuance. - Changes in his current professional responsibilities, without assuming Verizon has a cryptocurrency mandate.
