Current Position & Biography
Evgeny Morozov is the founder and publisher of The Syllabus, a knowledge-curation service, and an author examining the political and social consequences of technology. His own website confirms this role and his doctorate in History of Science from Harvard. He previously held visiting appointments at Stanford and Georgetown. The American Academy in Berlin describes him as a writer of Belarusian origin; that geographic association should not be read as a claim about his current residence.
Morozov wrote The Net Delusion and To Save Everything, Click Here, works addressing internet politics and the assumption that technical systems can resolve complex social problems. His later audio projects include The Santiago Boys, released in 2023, and A Sense of Rebellion, released in 2024. These broader projects provide context for his crypto commentary, rather than evidence that he develops blockchain software.
Notable Contributions
Morozov's direct connection to digital assets is The Crypto Syllabus. Its signed founding statement describes a collaboration between The Syllabus and the Center for the Advancement of Infrastructural Imagination, launched in 2021. The project assembled interviews, reading lists and bibliographies addressing blockchains, NFTs, decentralized autonomous organizations and central-bank digital currencies. Its background page explicitly identifies Morozov as chief curator.
The project approaches crypto through political economy, institutional power and intellectual history. Its foundational reading framework includes financialization, decentralization, geopolitics and the privatization of law. These are declared editorial choices, not a neutral ranking of protocols or an investment recommendation.
Its January 2022 conversation collection includes discussions with Yanis Varoufakis, Adam Tooze and Francesca Bria. In his interview with Bria, Morozov questions whether Web3's decentralization agenda adequately addresses democratic institutions, public infrastructure and the distribution of power. The New Institute also published material from that discussion in April 2022. Bria's answers remain her views and should not be attributed wholesale to Morozov.
Why Katharos Is Following Them
Morozov represents a critical editorial perspective within the wider blockchain conversation. His relevance comes from sustained, explicit engagement with crypto's political claims and the organization of resources for readers assessing them. This offers a useful counterpart to profiles focused on founders, infrastructure providers and investors.
Areas to Follow
Further crypto-related interviews, bibliographies and analysis published through The Syllabus or The Crypto Syllabus. Arguments about whether token-based systems distribute authority or reproduce concentrated ownership. Comparisons between blockchain projects and public approaches to digital infrastructure. How historical discussions of NFTs, DAOs and digital currencies are revised as their institutions and regulation change.
Reporting Scope
Coverage should distinguish Morozov's own arguments from interviewees' statements and present his critical framework as an attributed perspective. The Crypto Syllabus materials cited here document its 2021 launch and 2022 interviews; they do not establish a current publication schedule, an active token project or an investment role. Any later claims about adoption, market conditions or policy require fresh evidence.
