Current Position & Biography
Geert Lovink is a Dutch media theorist, internet critic and author, and the founder of the Institute of Network Cultures (INC). He established the institute in 2004 following his appointment at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. INC reports that it became an independent cultural organization in September 2026 after his retirement. His former university appointment is therefore historical, not a current executive or academic title in this profile.
Lovink's wider writing examines networked culture and the organization of digital life. His books include Networks Without a Cause (2012), Sad by Design (2019), Stuck on the Platform (2022) and Platform Brutality (2025). The Netherlands is his primary professional market here; international publication and teaching history should not be confused with a claim about present residence.
Notable Contributions
His direct cryptocurrency work includes coauthoring “10 Bitcoin Myths” with Eduard de Jong and Patrice Riemens. The essay is dated November 2015 and appears in the 2018 MoneyLab Reader 2: Overcoming the Hype. It critically examines claims about Bitcoin's intermediaries, trust, privacy, political neutrality, security and scalability. These are the authors' historical arguments, not independently established technical conclusions or a description of every contemporary cryptocurrency system.
Lovink also coedited MoneyLab Reader 2 with Inte Gloerich and Patricia de Vries. Its collection connects blockchain criticism with the financialization of art, payment infrastructures, cooperative platforms and alternative economic arrangements. This places his crypto contribution in public research, criticism and publishing rather than protocol engineering or exchange management.
The earlier MoneyLab Reader: An Intervention in Digital Economy was released in print in April 2015. Lovink was among its contributors. That volume brought currency design, payment technologies, crowdfunding and distribution into a shared discussion, providing a broader context for the subsequent blockchain-focused work.
Why Katharos Is Following Them
Katharos follows Lovink for a documented critical perspective on the social claims surrounding digital money. His writing offers questions to examine alongside technical and commercial accounts: who provides the infrastructure, where users place trust, and whether a proposed alternative changes economic power in practice. Inclusion recognizes a contribution to the discussion, not endorsement of his arguments or investment guidance.
Areas to Follow
New writing that directly addresses cryptocurrency, blockchain or digital payment systems.
MoneyLab publications and debates about financial infrastructure, with individual authorship distinguished from editorial involvement.
INC's development as an independent organization following its September 2026 transition.
The relationship between platform criticism, cooperative organization and alternative revenue models.
Reporting Scope
Coverage should distinguish Lovink's own work from the contributions of other MoneyLab authors. Historical essays should remain dated, and their criticisms should be attributed rather than presented as settled protocol facts. This profile does not identify him as a cryptocurrency founder, token issuer, investment manager or current university executive. Future role changes require fresh institutional evidence.
