Background & Biography
Gene Kogan is an artist and engineer working with artificial intelligence and generative systems. He created the Machine Learning for Artists project, known as ml4a, and the Abraham project, and co-founded Eden and Mars College. His digital-asset work includes NFT collections as well as research into how creative systems might be operated by groups rather than by a single author.
Kogan’s current website describes a background in applied mathematics, machine learning and music information retrieval. His practice subsequently expanded into interactive installations, generative imagery and education. His earlier teaching at NYU is treated here as historical, not as a current faculty appointment.
Notable Contributions
Brain Loops connects text-to-image machine learning with collectible moving images. The BrainDrops platform identifies Kogan as the artist, while Verse records the collection as 1,000 Ethereum ERC-721 works released in November 2021. The works are looping videos assembled through combinations of subjects and visual styles. This provides a concrete link between his AI-art practice and blockchain-based distribution.
His participation in NFTs also includes the later tokenisation of earlier work. Christie’s catalogued four components of Latent Character Arithmetic: King – Male + Female = “Queen” in its Augmented Intelligence sale. The catalogue distinguishes the artworks’ creation in 2015 from their minting on 12 February 2025. The underlying experiment used a neural network trained on handwritten Chinese characters to generate unfamiliar forms. The 2015 date should therefore not be read as an NFT mint date.
Player Computer, released in 2026, comprises 32 short musical films produced with code. Kogan publishes code alongside the generated films and links the project to SuperRare. Verse identifies the collection as Ethereum ERC-721. The project brings programmatic image-making and sound together, drawing on the historical analogy of the player piano. Its relevance lies in both the artwork and the relationship between executable code, media files and the tokens through which editions circulate.
Research & Education
Kogan’s 2019 paper Artist in the Cloud: Towards an Autonomous Artist presented Abraham as a proposal for a collectively developed creative agent. It discussed decentralised operation, governance and shared control over generative models. These are the paper’s research aims, not independently established guarantees that a deployed system is autonomous, private or impossible to reproduce.
His current website describes Abraham as a continuing artwork with a thirteen-year programme from 2025 to 2038. The schedule is an intended project commitment, not a promise by Katharos.ai that future output will occur. This profile does not assess any associated token’s economics or suggest that an AI system has human-like consciousness.
Alongside those projects, Kogan’s ml4a initiative offers educational material for creative uses of machine learning. Gray Area independently describes his workshops and his work on Eden and Abraham. Mars College provides a different educational setting: an annual off-grid community in the California desert. These activities explain his broader role in creative technical communities without making every teaching project a cryptocurrency initiative.
Why Katharos.ai Follows Gene Kogan
Katharos.ai follows Kogan at the intersection of generative art, digital ownership and collective creative systems. His projects help distinguish several questions that are often conflated: how an image is generated, how it is exhibited, what a token records and who controls the system that produces future work.
The presence of an NFT does not by itself establish copyright ownership, guarantee permanent access or demonstrate the autonomy of an underlying AI model. Reporting on specific projects can examine those boundaries without treating artistic experiments as financial products or technical certifications.
Areas to Follow
- Generative art distributed through NFT collections. - Code, media files and the preservation of computational works. - Collective control and governance of creative agents. - Open educational resources for artists using machine learning. - Clear distinctions between research proposals and operating systems.
Reporting Scope
Current work is distinguished from past teaching and from future project plans. Collection metadata is used to establish dates and formats, not investment merit. This profile makes no claims about prices, liquidity or returns and does not endorse a token, platform or purchase.
Inclusion is editorial and does not imply partnership or an advisory relationship with Kogan or the organisations named.
