Current Position & Biography
Gillian Tett is Provost of King’s College, Cambridge, and a Financial Times columnist and editorial-board member. King’s confirms that she took office as its 45th Provost in October 2023. Her training in anthropology informs a career examining how institutions, social expectations and financial systems interact. Her relevance to digital assets comes from journalism, public debate and interviews, rather than from operating a cryptocurrency exchange or building a blockchain protocol.
Her current academic position is distinct from her earlier FT management posts. King’s describes a three-decade career at the newspaper, while the International Association of Insurance Supervisors identifies her continuing weekly commentary on global finance and business. The United Kingdom is her principal institutional association for this profile; her work also addresses United States and international financial markets.
Notable Contributions
In a debate publicly released in April 2018, Tett participated in the debate “Bitcoin Is More Than a Bubble and Here to Stay,” presented with the Adam Smith Society. The organizer lists her and legal scholar Eric Posner on the side opposing the motion, against Patrick Byrne and Tim Draper. That documented position belongs to the dated debate and should not be read as an exhaustive statement of her subsequent views on every blockchain application.
Her public engagement also includes examining practical uses of digital assets. NEAR’s June 2022 account of events in Davos records her conversation with co-founder Illia Polosukhin about cryptocurrency and humanitarian assistance. The account is the project’s report of an interview, not independent proof of every claim made about the initiative or its results. Tett’s role was to conduct the conversation, not to run the fundraising project.
In a July 2025 Walker Webcast discussion, she examined an argument linking stablecoin expansion to additional demand for US Treasury securities. The host’s published transcript records her skepticism about the scale of the expected demand. This is an example of her analysis of the relationship between digital money and sovereign finance, rather than a forecast endorsed by Katharos or a claim that stablecoins necessarily improve financial stability.
Why Katharos Is Following Them
Tett brings a financial-journalism perspective to questions often framed only in technological terms. Her work makes trust, institutional incentives and the monetary system part of the discussion about crypto adoption. Following her offers a way to examine both promotional claims and objections through public arguments that can be checked against their original context.
Areas to Follow
Follow her commentary on stablecoin reserves and sovereign-debt demand; interviews about payment and humanitarian applications; and reporting on the institutions that shape digital-finance adoption. Assess predictions against subsequent evidence and distinguish an interview guest’s statements from the interviewer’s own conclusions.
Reporting Scope
Coverage focuses on Tett’s published financial analysis, crypto-related debates and interviews, and accurately dated professional roles. Participation in an industry event is not treated as endorsement of a token or company. Her academic leadership is biographical context, not evidence that King’s College endorses the crypto positions discussed. This profile does not offer investment advice or rank the assets and organizations she has covered.
