Background & Biography
Hiroki Takeuchi is co-founder and chief executive of GoCardless, a bank-payments business that became part of Mollie in September 2026. He continues to lead GoCardless; Koen Köppen leads the combined group. Those are distinct responsibilities, and Takeuchi should not be described as the chief executive of Mollie.
Takeuchi co-founded GoCardless in 2011. Before that, he worked at McKinsey & Company, and he holds a mathematics degree from the University of Oxford. Balderton Capital, an investor associated with the business, also identifies him as a member of its Founder Council.
Notable Contributions
Takeuchi’s work is directly relevant to digital payments through GoCardless’s account-to-account services. The company helps businesses collect recurring and one-off payments from customers’ bank accounts, using Direct Debit and open-banking connections. Its services connect payment collection with business software, including accounting and subscription-management applications.
This is a bank-payments business, not evidence that Takeuchi operates a cryptocurrency network or issues a stablecoin. Its relevance to the wider digital-finance ecosystem lies in the movement of money through banking infrastructure and the operational choices merchants face when accepting payments.
Mollie announced completion of its GoCardless acquisition on 1 September 2026. The announcement describes a phased integration of the two businesses. The transaction is therefore no longer merely a proposed acquisition, but it also should not be treated as proof that every product or operating system has already been integrated.
Why Katharos.ai Follows Hiroki Takeuchi
Katharos.ai follows Takeuchi to examine how account-to-account payments compete with, and complement, card-based collection. His position offers a view of the commercial and technical decisions behind recurring payments, payment failures and the use of open banking by businesses.
The combination with Mollie also creates questions worth following: whether merchants gain simpler reconciliation, how customers consent to payment collection, and whether product integration changes pricing or service quality. These are subjects for reporting, not conclusions established by an acquisition announcement.
Areas to Follow
- GoCardless’s integration with Mollie and any resulting changes to merchant services. - Direct Debit and open-banking payment collection for recurring and one-off transactions. - Payment reliability, customer consent, disputes and refund processes. - Connections between payment services and accounting or subscription software. - Evidence supporting claims about lower costs or improved payment success.
Reporting Scope
Coverage should distinguish Takeuchi’s statements from company marketing and separate GoCardless from the wider Mollie group. Customer counts, transaction volumes and financial measures should retain their reporting periods and entity scope. A bank-payment service should not be labeled a blockchain product without specific evidence.
Inclusion is editorial and does not imply a partnership, endorsement or advisory relationship with Takeuchi, GoCardless or Mollie.
Areas of Influence Category
Stablecoins & Payments is the primary category because of Takeuchi’s work in bank payments. The category does not imply that GoCardless is a stablecoin issuer. This profile remains unranked.
Current Position
Co-founder and CEO, GoCardless, a Mollie company.
