Current Position & Biography
Joon Ian Wong, also credited as Wong Joon Ian, is founder of PROMPT:CITY, an events and media platform focused on practical AI education. BFM’s October 2026 interview identifies that current role and discusses the platform’s work with Urbanscapes in Kuala Lumpur. This newer education project is distinct from his earlier cryptocurrency journalism, conference development and social-token research. Malaysia is listed here as a current professional market, not as a claim about citizenship or residence.
Wong’s digital-assets background includes reporting and organizing industry discussion. WAN-IFRA’s archived 2018 biography records that he joined CoinDesk as a reporter in 2013 and built its events business around the first Consensus conference in 2015. It describes his subsequent technology-reporting work at Quartz and return to a CoinDesk management role covering Europe and Asia. Those are historical appointments, not his current job titles.
Notable Contributions
WebX’s July 2023 speaker record identifies Wong as a founding president of the Association of Cryptocurrency Journalists and Researchers. It also lists him as moderator of a session about EOS network governance. The association role and event participation connect his profile to crypto journalism and public explanation, rather than to protocol engineering or regulatory authority.
His involvement also extended beyond independent reporting. His January 2021 article for The Block disclosed that he was Rally’s researcher-in-residence and a Seed Club member while discussing social tokens and media funding. GamesBeat reported the announced $PACENOTES coin in October 2020. These affiliations matter when assessing his writing about token-funded communities.
The later outcome of that platform should remain visible: Decrypt reported in January 2023 that Rally was shutting down its sidechain and that NFTs on it were not transferable to Ethereum mainnet. This is platform-level context, not an allegation that Wong caused the closure or a verified accounting of outcomes for his own token holders.
Why Katharos Is Following Them
Wong’s career connects crypto reporting, event-building and experiments in community finance. It offers a useful case for examining how people who explain an industry may also participate in it, and why dates and disclosed affiliations matter when evaluating commentary.
Areas to Follow
Follow his published analysis of community funding, any new documented crypto-related projects, and his current education work. Assess claims about audience ownership and participation against the underlying platform’s controls and continuity arrangements. AI education should not automatically be described as a blockchain initiative.
Reporting Scope
Coverage concerns verified professional roles, dated journalism and public discussions, and explicitly documented token affiliations. Historical roles are not represented as continuing appointments. Participation in a conference is not an endorsement of every speaker or asset, and this profile makes no investment recommendation.
