Background & Biography
Flament’s background combines computer science, business and international technology operations. IG Group’s 2026 meeting notice records a master’s degree in computer science from Télécom Paris and an MBA from London Business School. Earlier roles included financial analysis at LVMH, consulting at Boston Consulting Group and senior work at Hotels.com.
She joined Circle as managing director for Europe in February 2016, according to her original 2017 interview with WeAreTechWomen. That interview described regional expansion and the challenge of building teams in a developing financial-technology business. It is a historical account, not a description of Circle’s current product range.
She later served as chief executive of Mettle, NatWest’s small-business banking platform, and then of the NEAR Foundation. These were distinct organizations with different responsibilities; experience at one should not be treated as authorship or control of the others’ technology.
Notable Contributions
The NEAR Foundation announced Flament’s appointment as CEO effective January 1, 2022. The role concerned the organization supporting the NEAR blockchain ecosystem, rather than a claim that she created the protocol.
In her September 21, 2023 departure message, Flament described work on ecosystem support, community governance and NEAR Horizon, a program intended to help founders. She also stated that Chris Donovan would take over as CEO and that she would continue in a council role at that time. This profile does not carry that dated council statement forward as an independently verified current appointment.
Her more recent work includes Currency of Power, which she co-founded with Nicolas Colin. The publication describes its scope as monetary policy, geopolitics, banking and digital assets. This adds research and public discussion to her earlier operating experience, while remaining distinct from a regulator’s policy position or an issuer’s promise.
Why Katharos.ai Follows Marieke Flament
Digital-asset adoption involves more than launching a network. Organizations need governance, distribution, operational discipline and a clear explanation of what users gain. Flament’s career offers a way to examine these questions across a payments company, a blockchain-supporting foundation and financial-services boards.
Katharos.ai follows her attributable work at these intersections. Her executive history is relevant to how institutions organize around blockchain technology; her current writing is relevant to how that technology is interpreted. Neither professional experience nor a board appointment makes a prediction about digital money certain.
Areas to Follow
IG Group’s April 2026 meeting notice identifies Flament as a non-executive director and also records her non-executive role at Qivalis, a European bank consortium working on euro stablecoins. These are governance responsibilities, not claims that she personally manages every product or guarantees a stablecoin’s outcomes.
N26 announced her election to its supervisory board in June 2026, effective immediately but subject to the customary approval of Germany’s financial supervisor. The announcement is reported with that qualification rather than assuming a separate regulatory decision.
Areas to follow include bank participation in stablecoins, the relationship between payment infrastructure and financial institutions, and the analysis published through Currency of Power. Product announcements, approvals and actual customer availability should be checked separately.
Reporting Scope
This profile distinguishes Flament’s current advisory, publication and board work from her earlier roles at Circle, Mettle and the NEAR Foundation. It avoids presenting her as the current NEAR Foundation CEO or attributing protocol engineering to an executive appointment.
In her 2017 interview, Flament also discussed women’s participation in technology and the importance of collaborative teams. That is part of her public leadership record, not a substitute for evaluating the specific businesses and products associated with her. Coverage should examine clear evidence of implementation rather than infer success from an executive biography.
Areas of Influence Category
Exchanges & Infrastructure is the primary category, reflecting Flament’s work across digital payments, blockchain ecosystem support and institutional digital-finance governance. The focus is on her operating and organizational contributions, together with clearly attributed analysis, rather than price forecasts or investment recommendations.
Current Position
Co-founder, Currency of Power; non-executive director, IG Group and Qivalis. Her NEAR Foundation CEO role is historical. The June 2026 N26 announcement was subject to customary BaFin approval; this profile does not assert a later approval decision. United Kingdom reflects documented professional context, not inferred residence or citizenship.
