Background & Biography
Omar Sultan Al Olama is the United Arab Emirates’ Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence and chairman of its Artificial Intelligence and Data Authority. The current UAE Cabinet roster uses the shorter ministerial title; the authority appointment was announced on 14 June 2026.
Al Olama became minister of state for artificial intelligence in 2017. His portfolio expanded in July 2020 to include digital economy and remote work applications. The Cabinet’s biography also records his appointment as director general of the Prime Minister’s Office in 2023. These dates distinguish earlier responsibilities from the government’s subsequent institutional reorganisation.
Notable Contributions
The creation of the Artificial Intelligence and Data Authority places Al Olama at the head of a body combining functions previously held by the AI Office, the federal digital-government sector and the UAE Data Office. Its announced remit includes national AI strategy, government data management and standards for AI and digital services. These are institutional responsibilities, not evidence of personal authorship of every programme or technical system.
In July 2024, the UAE’s AI Office launched the Charter for the Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence. Al Olama publicly linked the initiative to safety, privacy and public trust. The charter sets out principles covering algorithmic bias, transparency, human oversight and accountability. It describes itself as a guiding framework; this profile does not present it as a comprehensive binding AI statute or as proof that every principle has been implemented.
His documented connection to digital assets includes participation in the World Economic Forum’s “Finding the Right Balance for Crypto” session on 19 January 2023. The session addressed regulation and the potential benefits and risks of digital currencies after market volatility. Participation establishes a role in the policy discussion, not direct responsibility for licensing or supervising cryptocurrency firms.
Why Katharos.ai Follows Omar Sultan Al Olama
Katharos.ai follows Al Olama at the intersection of AI governance, public-sector digital infrastructure and international technology-policy debate. The UAE’s evolving institutional structure offers a concrete setting for examining how governments turn AI ambitions into standards, procurement decisions and accountable public services.
For digital-asset coverage, his contributions are most useful when considered alongside the mandates and decisions of the relevant financial regulators. A minister’s statements about technology should be distinguished from enforceable rules, formal supervisory powers and measurable outcomes.
Areas to Follow
- The new authority’s published strategy, standards and allocation of responsibilities. - Evidence of how AI governance principles are applied in public services. - Data quality, privacy, human oversight and accountability in government AI systems. - Al Olama’s public contributions to discussions of digital assets and emerging technology policy.
Reporting Scope
Coverage should distinguish Al Olama’s statements from Cabinet decisions, institutional programmes and financial regulators’ rules. Announcements should not be treated as completed deployment or independent evidence of effectiveness. The 2026 authority announcement is the basis for the current chairmanship recorded here.
Katharos.ai’s interest is editorial. Inclusion does not imply a partnership, endorsement or advisory relationship with Al Olama or the UAE government.
