Background & Biography
Pieter van der Does is co-founder and co-CEO of Adyen, the Netherlands-based payments company. He co-founded the business in 2006 after working as chief commercial officer at Bibit. Adyen’s official biography records an economics degree from the University of Amsterdam.
He shares the chief executive role with Ingo Uytdehaage. At Adyen’s May 2026 annual general meeting, shareholders reappointed van der Does to the Management Board for a four-year term ending in 2030. A September 2026 company announcement also identifies him as co-founder and co-CEO.
Notable Contributions
Van der Does’s documented contribution is building and leading a payments business that combines payment acceptance and related financial services for merchants. This is an executive and entrepreneurial contribution, rather than evidence that he personally designed each component of Adyen’s technology.
A concrete example of the company’s infrastructure strategy is its January 2026 announcement of principal membership in France’s Cartes Bancaires network and direct participation in the STET clearing system. In that announcement, van der Does explained the intended benefits of greater operational control and more direct clearing. The release described a direct CB server connection as a planned next step, so that timetable should not be treated as independently verified completion.
Adyen has also announced participation in preparations for the European Central Bank’s digital-euro pilot. Its July 2026 explanation was written by chief technology officer Tom Adams and described testing planned for the second half of 2027. This is company activity under its leadership team, not a personal technical accomplishment attributed to van der Does. The article makes clear that participation does not amount to a decision to issue a digital euro.
Why Katharos.ai Follows Pieter van der Does
Katharos.ai follows van der Does for the merchant-payments perspective he brings to digital finance. Acceptance networks, clearing connections and the integration of different payment methods are important parts of how digital money reaches businesses and their customers.
His work offers a practical comparison point for emerging payment systems: what merchants must integrate, how transactions are processed and which operational responsibilities remain with payment providers. His inclusion is based on payments-industry leadership, without implying that he is a blockchain protocol developer or a stablecoin issuer.
Areas to Follow
- Adyen’s approach to payment acceptance and connections to domestic payment networks. - The division of responsibilities between merchants, acquirers and clearing systems. - Practical requirements for accepting a potential digital euro alongside existing payment methods. - Investment in infrastructure, operational reliability and the company’s financial disclosures.
Reporting Scope
Coverage should distinguish van der Does’s statements from those of other executives and from company-wide announcements. Product claims and forecasts should remain attributed to Adyen. In its October 2026 update, the company discontinued its medium-term EBITDA objective while describing plans to accelerate investment; earlier financial targets should not be presented as current commitments.
Katharos.ai’s interest is editorial. Inclusion does not imply a partnership, endorsement or advisory relationship with van der Does or Adyen, and is not an investment recommendation.
Areas of Influence Category
