Background & Biography
Before Dapper Labs, Gharegozlou founded Axiom Zen. His biography for HumanX Amsterdam in September 2026 records an earlier role as a partner at the Rising Tide Fund in Silicon Valley, focused on seed-stage investments. It also records his studies in economics and biological sciences at Stanford University.
Dapper Labs was founded by Gharegozlou and Dieter Shirley in 2018 as a spinout from Axiom Zen. The team had previously launched CryptoKitties in 2017. That history links Gharegozlou to an early consumer application of non-fungible tokens, while preserving the contributions of his co-founder and the wider development team. It does not make him the sole inventor of NFTs or their technical standards.
Notable Contributions
A concrete milestone was the July 2019 announcement by the NBA, the National Basketball Players Association and Dapper Labs of NBA Top Shot. The planned platform brought basketball highlights into a blockchain-based collecting experience. Dapper subsequently announced the opening of its beta to all fans in October 2020. These are distinct stages: a partnership announcement and a later public product release.
The project connected intellectual-property licensing, consumer accounts and blockchain assets. Its significance for this profile lies in that combination rather than in claims that collectibles must rise in value. Fans could engage with familiar basketball content through a product built around digital collecting.
Dapper also originally created Flow. The company now describes Flow as an open public network supported by an independent ecosystem of developers, validators and the Flow Foundation. Dapper is one company building on that network. Gharegozlou’s corporate and foundation roles therefore should not be treated as ownership or unilateral control of the entire blockchain.
Why Katharos.ai Follows Roham Gharegozlou
Consumer blockchain products test whether technical infrastructure can support experiences that people understand and return to. Gharegozlou’s work offers a concrete case for examining that question through licensed entertainment rather than trading interfaces alone.
Katharos.ai follows the relationship between product design, digital ownership and the infrastructure underneath. Useful evidence includes access to assets, the practical operation of marketplaces, portability, user protections and the durability of the underlying experience. An attractive brand partnership can help distribution, but it does not by itself establish lasting demand or remove platform risk.
Areas to Follow
The company’s published vision connects digital ownership with greater control over data and more composable applications. It also discusses software agents operating with programmable assets and transparent blockchain state. Those statements describe a direction of travel, not evidence that every proposed agent capability is already available or safe.
Areas to follow include how such ideas become concrete products, how permissions and spending limits are implemented, and what remains dependent on a company-operated interface. The distinction between an asset recorded on a blockchain and the services needed to use it remains important. AI features should be assessed by demonstrated functionality rather than by the presence of an AI label.
Reporting Scope
Coverage must also retain the legal and consumer context. On October 28, 2024, the court in Friel v. Dapper Labs approved a $4 million settlement and dismissed the action with prejudice. The case concerned allegations that NBA Top Shot Moments were sold as unregistered securities. The defendants denied wrongdoing and liability; the final judgment states that the settlement is not an admission of fault or wrongdoing. It was not a merits ruling that all NFTs are securities.
This profile uses dated announcements for product history and the 2026 conference biography for Gharegozlou’s roles. Corporate statements about openness and ownership are treated as the company’s stated position. They do not establish that every product has identical custody arrangements, licensing terms, decentralisation or consumer safeguards.
