Background & Biography
Signe Krogstrup is a Governor of Danmarks Nationalbank, Denmark’s central bank, a position she has held since 2020. She is one of the institution’s three governors. Christian Kettel Thomsen chairs the Board of Governors, while Krogstrup and Ulrik Nødgaard are its other members. Her title should not be interpreted as sole leadership of the bank.
Krogstrup earned an MSc in Economics from the University of Copenhagen in 1999 and a PhD in International Economics from the Graduate Institute in Geneva in 2003. Before joining Danmarks Nationalbank, she held research and monetary-policy positions at the Swiss National Bank and the International Monetary Fund. She became Assistant Governor and Head of Economics and Monetary Policy at Danmarks Nationalbank in 2019 before her appointment as governor.
Her professional background is in monetary economics and financial policy. Her relevance to crypto and digital finance rests on public analysis of stablecoins, the changing forms of money and the responsibilities of central banks, rather than on a role operating a token project or exchange.
Notable Contributions
In January 2026, Krogstrup delivered a speech on stablecoins and money to the Centre for European Policy Studies. She examined how broader stablecoin adoption could affect financial stability, monetary sovereignty and the relationship between private and public money. The bank published its account of the speech in February.
She emphasized uncertainty about future adoption rather than assuming that stablecoins would inevitably replace existing payment instruments. Her discussion connected regulatory developments in the United States and European Union with the need for cross-border coordination. It also distinguished the attention surrounding stablecoins from their then-limited use beyond transactions involving other crypto assets.
The speech presented the central bank’s role as safeguarding safe and efficient money and payment arrangements while allowing useful innovation. The emphasis was on resilience and fair conditions for different forms of money, not selecting a preferred technology or endorsing a particular issuer.
An earlier guest lecture at Frankfurt School in February 2024 placed crypto within a wider payments transformation. Krogstrup discussed the continued role of cash, growing digital payments, cyber security, crypto-based assets and central-bank digital currencies. The host’s account linked these topics to trust in money and the robustness of payment infrastructure.

Katharos.ai follows Krogstrup because her public work connects digital-asset developments with questions central to monetary systems: what makes money trustworthy, how payment arrangements remain dependable and how innovation changes the balance between public institutions and private providers.
Her perspective is useful for examining stablecoins as financial instruments with governance and risk-management requirements. It also encourages a distinction between possible benefits, actual adoption and the safeguards needed if new instruments become more widely used.
