Background & Biography
Sofia Crespo is an Argentine artist based in Lisbon whose practice connects artificial intelligence, biological imagery and digital art. She works independently and as part of Entangled Others, the artistic duo she forms with Feileacan Kirkbride McCormick. Her work includes physical prints, moving images and NFT editions, rather than treating every digital artwork as a blockchain project.
Crespo uses neural networks to explore how images shape perceptions of nature. Her projects often resemble specimens, illustrations or records of organisms while making clear that their forms have been generated or transformed. This distinction between observation and invention is central to her work.
Notable Contributions
Artificial Natural History is an ongoing project involving books and fine-art prints. It imagines biological specimens and classification systems that could belong to a speculative natural-history archive. Crespo’s project record identifies convolutional neural networks, cyanotypes and giclée prints among its media.
The project also has a documented NFT dimension. Verse lists an Artificial Natural History series presented by Feral File as Ethereum ERC-721 editions. That record establishes a blockchain-based edition of the work; it does not mean that the entire project began with that particular token release or that its physical prints and digital editions carry identical rights.
A separate institutional record provides a direct example of Crespo’s NFT work. ZKM’s collection catalogue identifies Puya Roseana as a 2025 computer-generated NFT. Its description situates the work within Critically Extant, a project that examines the uneven representation of endangered species in digital datasets. Generated organisms in that project are not necessarily accurate depictions of the species associated with them. The work explores the limits of available information rather than presenting synthetic imagery as scientific documentation.
Crespo’s collaborations also span physical and digital formats. Buffalo AKG Art Museum records Swim, made in 2022 by Entangled Others, as a combination of a plotter print and HTML, SVG, PNG and MP4 files. The artists donated the work to the museum in 2022. This museum entry is used here to describe the artwork and its acquisition, not to label every component as a token.
Recent Work & Recognition
Temporally Uncaptured draws on historical depictions of organisms and the cyanotype work of Anna Atkins. Crespo’s process combines neural-network-generated imagery with frames printed by hand as cyanotypes and then digitised. Her project record lists its presentation at Rice University’s Moody Center for the Arts in 2026.
The Moody also hosted Crespo through its spring 2026 Leslie and Brad Bucher Artist-in-Residence programme, with dates in March. That residency is a completed engagement, not her current institutional job. Her ongoing role remains her artistic practice and work with Entangled Others.
In 2025, Crespo and Anna Ridler jointly received the Artist of the Year category of Arab Bank Switzerland’s Digital Art Prize. The organiser describes their collaboration, begun in 2023, as combining analogue photography with artificial intelligence. The award is relevant to the on-chain art community, but it is not an assessment of the financial value or investment performance of their work.
Why Katharos.ai Follows Sofia Crespo
Katharos.ai follows Crespo at the intersection of generative art, NFT editions and institutional collecting. Her practice offers concrete examples of how the same artistic inquiry can move among datasets, generated images, physical prints, media files and blockchain records.
Those layers should remain distinct. A token record does not by itself establish copyright ownership, guarantee preservation of the associated media or validate the scientific accuracy of an image. Reporting on the artwork can examine those questions without treating it as an investment recommendation.
Areas to Follow
- AI-generated art distributed through NFT editions. - Museum collecting and preservation of digital artworks. - Relationships between physical prints, media files and tokens. - Dataset limitations and representations of the natural world. - Collaborative authorship in computational art.
