Background & Biography
Taavet Hinrikus is a partner at Plural and a founding partner at Skaala. He co-founded the cross-border payments company Wise, originally called TransferWise, with Kristo Käärmann. His present work centers on investing in and supporting technology companies, while his payments background comes from building and leading Wise.
Before Wise, Hinrikus worked at Skype, where he was its first employee and later director of strategy. TransferWise grew from the founders’ experience of moving money between the United Kingdom and Estonia. Work on the company began in 2010, and its first version launched in early 2011.
Hinrikus previously served as Wise’s chief executive and then chair. He announced his departure from the chair position in December 2021. Wise reiterated in July 2025 that he no longer held an operational or management role at Wise. Co-founder is therefore a historical relationship, not a description of current management authority.
Notable Contributions
Hinrikus helped establish a payments business focused on the cost and complexity of moving money across borders. His contribution was entrepreneurial and organizational: working with a co-founder and teams to develop a service, expand its reach and build a company around international transfers. That history is relevant to understanding competition between established financial institutions and technology-led payment providers.
His subsequent work links company-building experience with early-stage investment. At Skaala, his responsibilities include strategy and participation in investment committee work. Plural’s current profile describes investments spanning several technology fields, rather than an exclusive focus on financial services. He also co-founded Jõhvi Coding School in Estonia, extending his activity into technical education.
Why Katharos.ai Follows Taavet Hinrikus
Katharos.ai follows Hinrikus for his role in digital payments and the development of European technology businesses. Wise provides a practical example of how a new provider can approach international transfers, pricing and customer experience. His move into investing also offers a view of how experienced operators support later generations of founders.
His relevance here does not depend on a claim that Wise is a cryptocurrency network or that he designed a blockchain protocol. Cross-border payments are an important part of digital finance in their own right.
