Background & Biography
Urvashi Aneja is founder and executive director of Digital Futures Lab, an India-based research organisation examining how emerging technologies affect society. Her work addresses AI governance and the distribution of technology’s benefits, with particular attention to India and the Global South.
Aneja holds an MPhil and a PhD in Politics and International Relations from the University of Oxford, according to Digital Futures Lab’s current biography. From 2017 to 2021, she was founder and director of Tandem Research. This earlier role provides context for her work across technology, society and public policy; it is not her current institutional position.
Notable Contributions
Aneja authored UNDP’s 2022 foresight brief, Can Digital Public Goods Deliver More Equitable Futures? The publication is a specific contribution to discussion of digital public goods, rather than evidence that she holds an executive role at UNDP or designs every system discussed in that field.
In August 2025, Digital Futures Lab reported that Aneja and Dona Mathew co-authored “Designing for Public Good: Re-thinking Approaches to AI in Courts” for the anthology Justice Making, Justice Spaces & Justice Users. The chapter connects AI adoption to questions about how justice institutions serve the public.
Digital Futures Lab also identifies Aneja as project lead for Human in the Loop, a September 2024–November 2025 initiative exploring unintended consequences of generative AI in India. The project combined horizon scanning, expert and public consultations, and work with artists and storytellers. It was executed with Quicksand Design Studio and supported by Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies. The source separately names Harleen Kaur as research lead, so project leadership should not be confused with sole research authorship.
Why Katharos.ai Follows Urvashi Aneja
Katharos.ai follows Aneja for her research and public-policy perspective on AI, digital public goods and institutional accountability. Her work offers a way to examine who participates in technology decisions, who benefits from deployment and how public-interest goals are translated into practice.
The relevance is digital governance and responsible innovation. These sources do not establish that she is a cryptocurrency founder, blockchain protocol developer, financial regulator or investment adviser. Coverage should not stretch a connection to digital public infrastructure into claims about particular token networks or financial products.
Areas to Follow
