Background & Biography
Yi Gang is president of the China Society for Finance and Banking and a former governor of the People’s Bank of China (PBOC). East China Normal University identified him in both capacities when reporting his September 2026 lecture on monetary-policy reform. He led the PBOC from March 2018 until July 2023, when Pan Gongsheng succeeded him.
Yi studied economics at Peking University before continuing his education in the United States. He earned a doctorate in economics at the University of Illinois in 1986, taught at Indiana University from 1986 to 1994, and helped establish Peking University’s China Center for Economic Research in 1994. He joined the PBOC in 1997, became a deputy governor in 2007 and also headed the State Administration of Foreign Exchange from 2009 to 2015. He was elected president of the China Society for Finance and Banking in June 2022.
Notable Contributions
Yi’s career spans academic economics, monetary policy and foreign-exchange administration. For digital finance, a particularly relevant part of his public record is his explanation of the policy choices behind China’s digital renminbi, or e-CNY, during his central-bank governorship.
In his October 2022 Hong Kong FinTech Week speech, he described e-CNY as principally serving domestic retail payments. He outlined a two-tier arrangement involving the central bank and authorized operators, discussed the balance between transaction privacy and preventing illicit activity, and said cash would remain available. These were statements of policy intent and design, not independent evidence of how privacy protections operate in practice.
His later public remarks continued to address digital finance. A 2024 text attributed to his Peking University Shenzhen Forum keynote discusses collecting less personal information, obtaining consent, protecting stored data and conducting privacy and security assessments. In September 2026, he lectured on the evolution of China’s monetary-policy framework and interest-rate reform.
Why Katharos.ai Follows Yi Gang
Katharos.ai follows Yi for the connection between monetary institutions, digital payments and financial-data governance. His speeches provide a record of how a senior policymaker framed the objectives and trade-offs of central-bank digital money. His subsequent academic and policy commentary offers material for examining those ideas beyond his term in office.
The editorial interest is in evidence and institutional design: what a payment system is intended to do, how responsibilities are allocated, and how protections can be evaluated.
Areas to Follow
- Public commentary on central-bank digital money and retail payments. - Privacy, consent and data minimization in financial services. - The relationship between digital finance, inclusion and financial stability. - Monetary-policy transmission and interest-rate reform.
Reporting Scope
Coverage should clearly date Yi’s statements and distinguish his former PBOC responsibilities from his current society role. His post-2023 commentary should not be presented as a current central-bank directive. Institutional projects must not be attributed to him as their sole inventor or technical author. Claims about privacy or financial inclusion should be checked against operational evidence rather than repeated as established outcomes.
Katharos.ai’s interest is editorial. This profile does not imply a partnership, endorsement or advisory relationship with Yi or any institution associated with him.
