Background & Biography
Treccani’s route into digital assets combined computer science and finance. An EPFL alumni interview records a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, a master’s in financial engineering completed in 2010, and a doctorate in financial mathematics. He encountered Bitcoin while undertaking doctoral work at the Swiss Finance Institute. In that interview, he described how early experiences with cryptocurrency service providers helped direct his attention toward infrastructure for established financial institutions.
He founded Metaco in Switzerland in 2015. Rather than asking banks to abandon their operating models, the business developed software through which they could add digital-asset capabilities. Treccani also taught cryptography and blockchain subjects at EPFL and HEC Lausanne alongside Alexander Lipton between 2017 and 2019. These activities placed technical education alongside company-building, connecting a research background with the operational requirements of financial institutions.
A major corporate transition followed in May 2023, when Ripple acquired Metaco for USD 250 million. Ripple’s announcement identified Treccani as Metaco’s founder and CEO and described custody and tokenization technology as an extension of its enterprise offering. Reuters subsequently confirmed, through a Ripple spokesperson in February 2024, that he had left Metaco. The acquisition is an organizational milestone, and its announced price does not establish Treccani’s personal proceeds or wealth.
His current role belongs to a different business. Supervised’s leadership page identifies him as co-founder and CEO, alongside co-founder Seamus Donoghue; its public launch was announced in March 2025. The company describes a system that gathers operational updates through voice conversations and organizes them for managers. His public professional profile identifies Switzerland, which is the geography used here, without making a claim about citizenship or private residence.
Notable Contributions
Metaco’s significance lies in the layer between a blockchain and a bank’s own systems. Ripple’s acquisition announcement described Harmonize as infrastructure for custody and tokenization, supporting the handling of digital assets inside institutional businesses. This is a different role from taking every end investor’s assets into Metaco’s own custody. The distinction matters when assessing Treccani’s contribution: he helped build a technology supplier whose customers could use its software within their own services, permissions and governance arrangements.
HSBC’s November 2023 announcement provides a concrete example. The bank said it was working with Metaco to use Harmonize in a planned custody service for institutional clients investing in tokenized securities. HSBC explained that the service would complement its Orion issuance platform and tokenized-gold offering. This establishes a specific technology relationship during Treccani’s leadership. It should not be expanded into a claim that HSBC adopted every Ripple product, used XRP for that service, or had already launched the announced offering at that date.
The infrastructure also extended to how transactions could be approved and signed. In December 2023, IBM described work with Metaco on its Hyper Protect Offline Signing Orchestrator. IBM outlined a design separating an externally accessible Harmonize component from an isolated cold vault, with disconnected operations and multi-party approvals. This illustrates the engineering problem Metaco addressed: institutions need processes for moving assets as well as protecting keys. It is evidence of a product collaboration, rather than proof that any architecture eliminates operational or security risk.
Treccani has a separate research contribution. With Olivier Scaillet and Christopher Trevisan, he co-authored High-Frequency Jump Analysis of the Bitcoin Market, submitted in 2017. The paper examined transaction-level Mt. Gox data from 2011–2013 to study abrupt price changes, order flow and liquidity. Its historical dataset limits what it can establish about today’s markets, but the work demonstrates direct engagement with market microstructure beyond a company spokesperson’s role.
His educational contribution includes Blockchain and Distributed Ledgers: Mathematics, Technology, and Economics, co-authored with Alexander Lipton and published by World Scientific in 2021. The book brings mathematical, technological and economic questions into a single treatment of distributed ledgers. A review in Quantitative Finance provides independent confirmation of the publication and its subject matter. Authorship gives readers a substantial body of work to inspect when evaluating his technical perspective.
Supervised is a new chapter rather than a custody product. Its published workflow describes an AI agent asking employees for updates, transforming conversations into structured information and directing that information into existing workplace systems. The founders’ stated motivation connects the product to experience scaling an enterprise-software organization. Claims about management capacity or customer productivity remain company claims; the profile does not treat those promotional targets as independently established outcomes.
Why Katharos.ai Follows Adrien Treccani
Katharos.ai follows Treccani because institutional adoption depends on infrastructure that is often invisible to the end user. A bank can announce a digital-asset service only after resolving questions about approvals, key access, system integration and responsibility. Metaco’s bank and technology relationships make his career useful for examining how specialized software companies influence that process. The relevant evidence is the work and the counterparties, rather than a token’s price or a general promise of disruption.
His move into AI also creates a useful point of comparison. Both custody software and organizational AI require a clear account of who can act, what information a system relies on, and how decisions can be reviewed. That comparison is editorial analysis, not a claim that the products share a technical architecture. Following Treccani allows Katharos.ai to distinguish a founder’s continuing ideas from the subsequent decisions of a business he no longer leads.
Areas to Follow
- Supervised’s independently documented deployments, including how customers evaluate information quality and the usefulness of automated operational updates. - Evidence of privacy controls, access permissions and human review in organizational AI, especially where employee conversations become business records. - Treccani’s future research, writing and public explanations of enterprise technology, with a distinction between technical demonstrations and commercial claims. - The continuing influence of Metaco’s infrastructure approach, while attributing current Ripple product and business decisions to their present leadership.
Reporting Scope
This profile covers Treccani’s documented professional record through 6 October 2026. Current role information comes from Supervised; the Metaco transition is supported by Ripple’s acquisition announcement and Reuters’ departure reporting. Academic work is treated separately from corporate achievements. Historical partnerships are identified by their announcement dates and do not imply that every proposed service is operating today.
The reporting excludes private financial information and unsupported claims about personal holdings or acquisition proceeds. Security descriptions identify intended controls, not guarantees. The relationship between a bank, a software provider and the legal custodian of an asset must be established for each service rather than inferred from the presence of a familiar company name.
Areas of Influence
Treccani’s principal influence fits Exchanges & Infrastructure and Investment & Founders: institutional custody technology, enterprise-software creation and the transition from a specialist company to a strategic acquisition. His research, teaching and book also support Community, Media & Education. Switzerland is his verified public professional geography, while Metaco’s international institutional relationships explain why his historical influence extends beyond one domestic market.
