Background & Biography
Alex Svanevik leads Nansen from a professional base in Singapore, which he lists on his public GitHub profile. His route into crypto began in applied data science and entrepreneurship. In a 2023 interview with OPTO, he described founding an early AI and machine-learning business, Codeus, then spending almost three years in management consulting before returning to data science. That sequence helps explain his subsequent emphasis on making analytical tools usable within a business.
He joined Schibsted Media Group in 2014 and worked first as a data scientist, then as a data science manager. His March 2018 account of those four years discusses marketplace analytics, model evaluation and the practical difficulties of managing specialist teams. It advocates simple baselines, close collaboration with product managers and care in interpreting causality. These are useful records of his working approach before Nansen, without attributing the wider organization's results solely to him.
Ethereum attracted his attention in 2017, and he moved into crypto professionally in 2018 as CoinFi's chief data scientist in Hong Kong. CoinFi's contemporary publications identify his role and credit his exchange-token research. By February 2019, he and Evgeny Medvedev were publishing work through D5, a data-science collective. Their token-recommender project applied machine learning to public Ethereum holdings, testing whether associations between tokens could improve discovery. They explicitly distinguished those statistical associations from investment advice.
Nansen took shape in 2019 with Svanevik, Medvedev and Lars Bakke Krogvig as co-founders; its paid product went live in April 2020. The distinction matters because accounts variously date the company's beginnings to the founding work or the public launch. Its October 2020 seed announcement named all three founders and recorded a $1.2 million round led by Mechanism Capital and Skyfall Ventures. A June 2021 announcement followed with a $12 million Series A led by Andreessen Horowitz. These milestones document the move from a small technical venture into a funded analytics business.
Notable Contributions
Nansen's central contribution is the contextual layer it adds to blockchain records. A transaction shows addresses and amounts, but understanding an exchange deposit, a fund's holdings or a trader's activity requires additional attribution. The company combines address labels with analytical interfaces so users can investigate activity at wallet, entity and market levels. Svanevik's influence lies in co-founding and leading the organization that commercialized this approach; its data engineering, research and product work are collective achievements.
Its Smart Money classifications are a particularly visible part of that system. Nansen's methodology explanation describes both manual identification and automated screening, with different treatment for institutions and performance-based wallet categories. Current documentation considers realized profits, returns, win rates and trading diversity over specified periods. These labels encode a methodology rather than a universal definition of investing skill. The company revises its classifications, and older descriptions can therefore misrepresent the current product.
The limitations are important to understanding Svanevik's business. Onchain records do not provide a complete picture of activity inside centralized exchanges, while one participant may control multiple wallets. Nansen itself warns that hidden wallet relationships, interpretation delays and confusing correlation with causation can undermine conclusions. A historically profitable address can also make losing trades, and competence in one activity does not establish competence in another. Accordingly, wallet tracking is evidence for further investigation, with conclusions dependent on coverage, attribution and the period examined.
Nansen broadened its operating role on 10 September 2024, announcing its acquisition of non-custodial staking provider Stakewithus. The company presented the deal as a way for users to move from analysis into staking through the same platform. It also described earlier validator work with Ronin, including participation when Ronin staking launched in April 2023. This expansion gave Nansen a more direct role in network infrastructure and introduced operational responsibilities beyond publishing analytics.
The Nansen AI launch on 25 September 2025 brought a conversational mobile interface to token research, wallet analysis and portfolio questions. On 21 January 2026, its release notes opened integrated trading beyond the earlier paid-user beta, subject to geographic eligibility. That release identified Jupiter, OKX DEX and LI.FI as execution-routing partners and Privy as the provider behind the embedded wallet infrastructure. Nansen subsequently documented Hyperliquid perpetual-futures trading as available to eligible users from 9 June 2026. Together, these releases mark a concrete transition from observing markets to helping users transact.
Why Katharos.ai Follows Alex Svanevik
Katharos.ai follows Svanevik because the tools used to interpret a market can shape which participants, transactions and narratives receive attention. Nansen's classifications influence what its users see as noteworthy, while its move into execution brings those interpretations closer to financial decisions. That makes methodology changes, error handling and product incentives consequential subjects for reporting. The editorial question is how effectively the company turns transparent records into dependable understanding.
His AI ambitions also deserve precise attribution. In a July 2026 interview with The Block, Svanevik predicted that trading agents could outnumber human traders within roughly two years. He also described autonomous agents as still undergoing testing at that time. This was a CEO's forecast and development account, distinct from the released research interface and user-facing trading features. Evaluating that vision requires evidence about reliability and costs as well as adoption.
Later releases extended those building blocks. On 17 August 2026, Nansen announced API-based execution for Solana and Base spot trades and Hyperliquid perpetuals. On 28 September, the company reported that Nansen Agent could retain users' preferences between conversations. These releases document additional execution and personalization tools; they do not by themselves establish the reliability or profitability of fully autonomous trading.
Areas to Follow
- Wallet attribution: how labels are verified, corrected and updated as users move between addresses and chains. - Smart Money methodology: changes to eligibility, observation periods and treatment of incomplete trading histories. - AI reliability: whether answers can be traced to underlying data, and how the product handles uncertain or conflicting evidence. - Execution and staking: integration quality, validator performance, transaction controls and the incentives created by fees. - Autonomous trading: the progression from experiments and backtests to documented deployments, including operating costs and safeguards. - Access: differences between a globally visible analytics platform and the jurisdictions eligible for its trading products.
Reporting Scope
Coverage focuses on Svanevik's documented professional activity, Nansen's product development and the methods behind its public analysis. Company announcements establish what Nansen says it has launched; they do not independently establish the quality of its signals or the profitability of its users. Research should be assessed through its data, assumptions, time window and authorship. A team-produced finding should not be presented as Svanevik's personal discovery unless the record supports that attribution.
Geography also needs care. Singapore identifies his publicly stated professional base, while Nansen's current support documentation restricts trading access there and applies additional limits to perpetuals elsewhere. This profile does not infer nationality from location or equate a founder's base with product availability. Market predictions and product aspirations are attributed to their speaker and date, with outcomes checked separately.
Areas of Influence
Svanevik fits Exchanges & Infrastructure through Nansen's analytical data services, execution integrations and staking operations. Investment & Founders reflects his role building a company around investment research workflows, rather than a claim that his own portfolio performance is established here. Community, Media & Education captures his technical writing and public explanations of how to interpret blockchain activity. Across these categories, the connecting theme is the practical use of data: how it is organized, communicated and eventually incorporated into decisions.
