Current Position & Biography
Alexey Gotsman is a Research Professor at IMDEA Software Institute in Spain. He works on software verification and distributed computing, and his personal academic page also lists a part-time visiting academic role at Amazon Web Services. Before joining IMDEA, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Cambridge, where he completed his doctorate. His research examines how distributed programs can provide dependable guarantees when communication and execution do not proceed ideally.
Notable Contributions
With Manuel Bravo and Gregory Chockler, Gotsman coauthored Making Byzantine Consensus Live. The work separates the problem of bringing correct participants into overlapping protocol rounds from the rest of consensus. Its view-synchronizer abstraction supports reasoning about whether several Byzantine consensus designs will eventually reach a decision under partial synchrony. The paper studies single-shot versions of protocols including HotStuff, Tendermint, PBFT and SBFT, and analyzes latency within that model. This is a formal contribution, not a blanket audit of their deployed implementations.
Why Katharos.ai Is Following Them
Katharos.ai follows Gotsman because a blockchain needs to do more than avoid contradictory decisions: it must also keep making progress under the assumptions its designers promise. The distinction between safety and liveness can disappear behind broad claims that a system is fault tolerant. Modular reasoning makes those claims easier to examine and helps reveal where timing assumptions enter the argument.
Areas to Follow
Byzantine consensus, protocol liveness, replication and verification methods for distributed systems. Coverage will distinguish a proof about a specified algorithm from evidence about production software. Particular attention will go to leader changes, network disruption and the conditions needed for normal operation to resume. Comparisons between protocols should keep their models and failure assumptions visible.
Reporting Scope
Spain identifies Gotsman’s IMDEA Software professional base in the Madrid region, not nationality or the headquarters of an industrial collaborator. Earlier Cambridge affiliations are historical. His research extends beyond blockchain; this profile focuses on the consensus and verification work that directly informs distributed-ledger design, without implying endorsement of a token or commercial network.
