Current Position & Biography
Arantxa Zapico is a cryptography researcher at the Field Extension Institute, following earlier work at the Ethereum Foundation. She earned her doctorate at Pompeu Fabra University in 2022, with Carla Ràfols and Vanesa Daza as supervisors, after studying mathematics at the National University of Córdoba. Her research centers on cryptographic proof techniques. The Financial Cryptography and Data Security 2027 conference lists her as a program co-chair alongside Roger Wattenhofer; that is a forthcoming conference responsibility, not a claim that the event has already occurred.
Notable Contributions
Zapico coauthored Baloo: Nearly Optimal Lookup Arguments with Ariel Gabizon, Dmitry Khovratovich, Mary Maller and Carla Ràfols. The work studies how a prover can establish relationships involving entries in a table without performing work proportional to the entire table. Its commit-and-prove approach is relevant to proving computations involving hash functions and the Ethereum Virtual Machine. This describes a research construction, not an assertion that every Ethereum application uses it.
Why Katharos.ai Is Following Them
Katharos.ai follows Zapico because proof-system design helps determine the practical cost of verifiable computation. Blockchain applications increasingly need to establish that a calculation followed the rules without repeating every step for every observer. The details of those proofs affect performance, implementation complexity and the assumptions users must trust. Her work offers a technical lens on these choices rather than a promotional narrative about zero-knowledge technology.
Areas to Follow
Lookup arguments, succinct proofs, verifiable computation and the connection between theoretical guarantees and deployed proof systems. Coverage will examine what a protocol actually proves, which setup assumptions it requires and whether an implementation preserves the properties claimed in the research. Academic progress and commercial adoption will be reported separately.
Reporting Scope
Argentina reflects the location listed on Zapico’s public professional profile, not nationality or her employer’s headquarters; it is a self-listed location rather than an independently verified office. Current-role wording follows her personal site and the conference roster, not older pages that still identify her with the Ethereum Foundation. Inclusion does not endorse a protocol, company or investment.
