Background & Biography
Ong's route into cryptocurrency began with economics and an interest in programming. In a CryptoSlate interview, he said he graduated from University College London in 2012 and encountered Bitcoin through Hacker News in 2013 while learning to code. Reading about the technology led him toward a practical information problem: the growing market needed accessible ways to compare assets. He and TM Lee began CoinGecko in April 2014, initially tracking 20 cryptocurrencies.
The founders chose Kuala Lumpur as a place to build for a worldwide audience. Ong has explained that a lower-cost operating base and conservative hiring helped them develop the company without relying on venture funding in its early years. CoinGecko's own tenth-anniversary account describes the business as a part-time project that gradually became a team spread across Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines. Malaysia is therefore the professional market used in this profile; it is not an assertion about his present private residence or every company entity's place of incorporation.
His responsibilities changed materially in August 2025. CoinGecko announced that Ong would succeed Lee as CEO, with Lee becoming president and focusing on longer-term product development and new research initiatives. The same announcement named Cedric Chan as chief technology officer, making clear that technical infrastructure has its own leadership. Ong's current role combines executive accountability with the operating experience accumulated during his years as COO, rather than making him the individual author of every methodology or product.
Notable Contributions
CoinGecko's original contribution was to organize crypto information beyond a simple list of prices. Its founding proposition combined market data with indicators such as community activity and open-source development. The company's present overview includes trading volume, market capitalization and contract addresses among its information fields. These choices matter because the identity of a token and the quality of its market are separate questions from whether its displayed price has risen.
Exchange comparison became a particularly consequential part of the business. CoinGecko introduced Trust Score in 2019 to address the limitations of ranking venues by reported volume alone. Its methodology updated in August 2026 combines liquidity, cybersecurity, regulatory credentials, past incidents and proof-of-reserves information. The published framework gives liquidity the largest weight and describes the final result as a relative ranking across assessed exchanges, recalculated weekly. It expressly says the regulatory component is not a compliance audit or legal endorsement, a useful boundary when interpreting a high score.
The API turned this information into an input for other businesses. CoinGecko dates its free public API to May 2018 and its enterprise API to March 2021. A developer can use a common data interface instead of maintaining separate connections to every market being followed. For Ong, the strategic significance is that CoinGecko can influence products whose users never visit its website. Reliability, documentation and the treatment of missing or inconsistent observations become as important as the appearance of its consumer pages.
GeckoTerminal extended the company's coverage into decentralized trading. Launched by the CoinGecko team in 2021, it displays prices, transactions, volume and liquidity for individual pools and provides an API for developers. Pool-level data helps users distinguish markets for the same token across different chains or trading venues. CoinGecko's own tutorial also warns that automated onchain discovery can include scam tokens. Being visible in a dataset is therefore different from having passed a substantive assessment of a project's merits.
A further expansion came with the acquisition of NFT data company Zash, announced in November 2023. Zash brought capabilities involving indexed marketplace data, historical trades, lending and wash-trade detection. The announcement set out a plan to combine fungible-token and NFT information within CoinGecko's offering. This was an organizational acquisition during Ong's COO tenure, not a claim that he personally developed the acquired technology, and the announcement's future integration schedule should not substitute for current product documentation.
Education has remained another part of the company's work. CoinGecko's history records the start of its quarterly reports in 2017 and publication of How to DeFi in 2020, followed by additional books. Ong's personal website also documents his contributions to academic reference books on digital currency and blockchain finance. His public writing connects the business of collecting data with the task of explaining markets, although a founder's commentary remains an interpretation rather than an independent forecast.
Why Katharos.ai Follows Bobby Ong
Katharos.ai follows Ong because data businesses can shape market attention without operating the underlying exchanges. Ranking rules affect which venues appear credible, while coverage decisions affect which assets become easy to discover. The relevant editorial question is how those choices are documented, updated and challenged. A popular metric can be useful while still concealing assumptions that readers need to understand.
CoinGecko's AI integrations make this question more immediate. Its current Model Context Protocol documentation describes tools that give compatible AI clients access to prices, historical information, exchange data and onchain analytics. The service offers a public keyless connection as well as authenticated and local options with different access arrangements. This broadens the routes through which data reaches users, but a live connection alone does not establish that an AI's explanation, comparison or investment conclusion is correct. Katharos.ai watches whether the original data's timing and limitations survive that additional layer of interpretation.
Areas to Follow
- Data quality and methodology: changes to exchange scoring, liquidity assessment, asset identification and treatment of anomalous activity. Documented changes should be compared with their effects on published rankings. - Enterprise execution: API reliability, usable historical coverage, documentation and pricing, especially where other businesses depend on CoinGecko for customer-facing information. - Onchain coverage: GeckoTerminal's handling of new networks, pools and tokens, with attention to contract identifiers and the separation of discovery from endorsement. - AI distribution: how CoinGecko data is used by assistants and agents, including source attribution, timestamps, access limits and correction of misleading summaries. - Leadership and independence: how the CEO transition changes product priorities and commercial relationships, judged through confirmed announcements and delivered services rather than speculation about ownership.
Reporting Scope
Coverage focuses on Ong's verified executive responsibilities, attributable public commentary and CoinGecko's documented products and methodologies. Historical interviews are used for his account of the company's beginnings, while current official pages govern his title and present product capabilities. Company-reported scale figures should be dated and identified as such; this profile does not need a changing user count to explain his influence. It also distinguishes data aggregation, educational publishing and technical infrastructure from exchange operation, custody or personalized financial advice.
Areas of Influence
Community, Media & Education is the principal category because Ong's work makes crypto markets more visible and interpretable. Exchanges & Infrastructure captures the APIs, exchange comparisons and onchain information services that support other applications. Investment & Founders recognizes his role in creating and now leading CoinGecko, without treating a data-platform listing or founder comment as a recommendation. Across those categories, Katharos.ai's focus is the quality of the evidence people use to make decisions and the responsibilities of the businesses supplying it.
