Background & Biography
Vélez founded Nu in 2013 after working in finance and venture capital. Nu's management biography records his previous role leading Sequoia Capital's Latin American investment activity, preceded by work at Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and General Atlantic. He holds undergraduate and MBA degrees from Stanford University. That background places his principal contribution in company building and financial distribution, rather than protocol development.
Nubank began with a mobile-first credit-card proposition and broadened into a larger financial-services platform. The company's account of its development identifies the launch of a savings account in 2017 as an important foundation for additional products, including investments and crypto. This history matters because its digital-asset offering entered an existing customer relationship. Users were not necessarily discovering Nubank through cryptocurrency; they could encounter crypto through an app used for other financial needs.
The professional geography is equally important. Vélez's public professional profile identifies São Paulo and Nubank, while company materials identify São Paulo as its headquarters. Brazil is therefore used as the primary market, with Mexico, Colombia and the United States representing documented areas of group activity. This classification does not make a claim about his citizenship, private residence or the legal domicile of every company in the group.
Notable Contributions
Nubank's entry into direct crypto transactions was announced in May 2022. Infrastructure partner Paxos described buying, holding and selling bitcoin and ether within Nubank's platform. Forbes Brasil independently reported the rollout and Vélez's stated view that cryptocurrency could have significant regional impact. The partnership shows a division of responsibilities: Nubank supplied distribution and the customer interface, while specialist infrastructure supported the initial service. Founder leadership should not be confused with personally building the custody systems.
Vélez provided a more specific rationale in a May 2022 Bloomberg Línea interview. He said Nubank had observed customers moving money toward crypto platforms and wanted to address that demand while preparing for possible technological changes in finance. The interview also discussed a limited corporate bitcoin allocation. Those remarks establish his direct involvement in articulating strategy, but they are historical statements. They are not evidence of Nu's current treasury holdings, and they do not disclose his personal investment position.
Stablecoins subsequently became another channel of access. Circle's December 2023 announcement described an initial rollout of USDC through Nubank Cripto for Brazilian customers. Buying and holding digital dollars was the first phase, with broader integrations described as future possibilities. This distinction is important: an announced partnership can establish available functionality and a direction of travel without proving that every anticipated use case has been delivered.
The platform reached a substantial reported scale. In August 2025, Nubank said Cripto had 6.6 million users and offered 29 digital assets, alongside swaps and recurring purchase functionality. The company later reported more than 7 million crypto customers in March 2026. These are dated company disclosures. They show the potential reach of the distribution channel, but they are neither an independently audited active-trader count nor a measure of customer investment performance. Later changes to the asset list or user base should be evaluated against newer disclosures.
Not every token initiative continued in its original form. In September 2024, Nubank announced that Nucoin would cease being bought and sold and would instead be used for benefits within its rewards ecosystem. The company described a time-limited conversion option for eligible balances and a change in the program's focus. In October 2026, Nubank promoted a new NuCoin benefits program involving points, coupons and prize draws. This product history belongs alongside expansion milestones: it demonstrates that the Nucoin rewards program and the wider Nubank Cripto service are distinct offerings with different trajectories.
The June 2024 Lightspark partnership addressed another possible use of blockchain infrastructure. Nubank said engineering teams would explore integration with Bitcoin's Lightning Network and Universal Money Addresses. The release described technical work and future services, not a completed rollout to every customer. Its relevance is the effort to connect a large consumer platform with alternative payment infrastructure. Actual deployment, eligibility and transaction activity require their own evidence.
Nubank also announced a staking-based Earn Crypto feature in March 2026, initially involving Solana. That development moved beyond simply holding or trading assets into a product designed to provide crypto rewards. The announcement included a temporary promotional rate, which is not reproduced here as a current offer. The product illustrates a broader range of digital-asset functions, while its risks and conditions remain different from those of a conventional deposit account.
In September 2026, Nu introduced Nu Global, describing balances converted into USDC or EURC and support for selected crypto assets. Vélez linked the product to international money-management needs. This was announced alongside, but separately from, the U.S. launch through partner Lead Bank. Both product websites still displayed waitlists on 9 October 2026, so the launch did not imply universal availability. Their separate legal and operational arrangements remain important when evaluating access.
The U.S. charter process adds a further institutional dimension. Nu's application included digital-asset custody among proposed services. The OCC's January 2026 letter granted preliminary conditional approval and explicitly withheld authorization to commence banking until preopening requirements were met. Nu's September launch announcement still described a partner-bank model. The relevant milestones are therefore application, conditional approval, commercial launch through a partner and any later final authorization, rather than a single undifferentiated claim that Nu already operates its own fully approved U.S. bank.
Why Katharos.ai Follows David Vélez
Katharos.ai follows Vélez because strategic decisions at a large consumer-finance platform can materially affect how people first encounter digital assets. A founder does not have to create a blockchain to influence adoption: decisions about distribution, counterparties, product scope and geography can determine the audience and form of access.
The strongest evidence is the combination of his own explanations and the group's documented product history. That record includes launches, proposed integrations and a redesigned rewards program. Following all three gives a more useful account than treating growth alone as the measure of influence. It also keeps the distinction between executive direction and the work of specialist product, engineering and compliance teams visible.
Areas to Follow
- Nu Global's actual rollout, supported jurisdictions and distinctions between stablecoin balances and partner-bank deposits. - Current Nubank Cripto usage, supported assets and customer-facing custody arrangements. - The progress of the proposed U.S. national bank and any separately confirmed digital-asset services. - Evidence of deployed functionality following the Lightspark partnership, rather than assuming universal adoption from the original announcement. - Vélez's public strategy statements and the group's response to changes in customer demand or regulation.
Reporting Scope
This profile covers Vélez's public leadership and the digital-asset activities of Nu that explain its relevance. Company metrics and partner claims remain attributed and dated. Historical treasury comments are not presented as current holdings. The profile distinguishes plans from launches, the group from individual legal entities, and Vélez's strategic authority from personal authorship of products.
Areas of Influence
Investment & Founders, Exchanges & Infrastructure, and Stablecoins & Payments are the principal categories. They capture entrepreneurship, consumer access to crypto, custody-related expansion and stablecoin distribution. Regulatory developments are relevant to these businesses, but Vélez's corporate role does not make him a financial regulator or turn a company's approval into an endorsement of every asset it supports.
Katharos.ai publishes this profile for information, based on the sources listed. Inclusion is not an endorsement of the individual, their organizations, or any investment product.
