Background & Biography
Eric Wall’s work in cryptocurrency has roots in financial infrastructure. Lund University records a 2016 master’s-level thesis, co-authored with Gustaf Malm, on using blockchains and smart contracts to create a distributed securities depository. The project examined how a shared ledger might reduce friction between institutions involved in securities ownership and settlement. It was a research design exercise, rather than evidence that an operational securities market had been replaced. The subject nevertheless establishes an early interest in the relationship between cryptography, financial coordination and market structure.
Wall subsequently worked at Cinnober, the exchange and clearing technology company. An October 2018 company announcement identifies him as its cryptocurrency and blockchain lead in connection with a proposed integration of GAP600’s transaction-confirmation service. The announcement concerned how an exchange might credit cryptocurrency deposits more quickly using a third-party risk service. That experience is relevant to his later commentary because it involved practical trade-offs between transaction speed, settlement confidence and additional service providers.
He later served as chief investment officer of Arcane Assets. A June 2021 announcement from DeFi Technologies, whose Valour subsidiary was exploring a product with Arcane, identifies him in that role. By November 2022, StarkWare’s announcement of the foundation’s launch described him as a former Arcane Assets CIO and named him among its seven initial directors. These are distinct chapters: a past investment-management position and participation in the formation of a foundation supporting a public blockchain network.
Wall co-founded Taproot Wizards with Udi Wertheimer in 2023, a chronology independently reported by The Block. His public professional page and the 2026 ctrl/shift speaker program continue to identify him with the company. The latter places Bitcoin consensus mechanisms and proposed upgrades at the center of his current public work. His professional profile lists Portugal; that is the basis for the country field here, rather than an inference from nationality, appearances at conferences or the locations of associated organizations.
Notable Contributions
Taproot Wizards brought a recognizable visual identity to a technical and cultural argument about Bitcoin. The project’s website describes a collection of 2,108 wizard inscriptions, while its manifesto invokes the early “Magic Internet Money” image and a more experimental Bitcoin culture. The stated ambition extends to supporting people building on the network. Wall’s contribution is therefore best understood as company-building and community organization around Bitcoin applications, rather than authorship of the Ordinals protocol or Bitcoin’s Taproot upgrade.
The associated Quantum Cats project makes the connection to protocol advocacy particularly explicit. Its official site asks collectors to show support for bringing OP_CAT back to Bitcoin. OP_CAT is a proposed scripting instruction for joining two values, and its supporters argue that it could expand the range of constructions developers can build. Using collectible characters to introduce that argument is a distinctive form of technical communication. Participation in a collection, however, does not establish agreement across Bitcoin’s users or validate the engineering claims behind a proposed change.
The technical authorship belongs elsewhere. Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 347 names Ethan Heilman and Armin Sabouri as its authors and specifies OP_CAT in Tapscript, including a size limit on the resulting value. It describes activation through a soft fork. The Bitcoin Improvement Proposals repository separately explains that publication is an archival and editorial step, not a judgment that an idea has consensus or will be adopted. Wall’s visible role is advocacy and ecosystem-building around the proposal; those activities must be distinguished from specification authorship and network activation.
Taproot Wizards also attracted institutional funding for this agenda. In February 2025, The Block reported a $30 million financing led by Standard Crypto and quoted Wertheimer describing plans to support OP_CAT-related development inside and outside the company. That is evidence of resources committed to an initiative and of management’s intended use of them. It does not by itself demonstrate completed infrastructure, an approved Bitcoin upgrade or returns for users. Subsequent software and developer activity are the relevant evidence for assessing what the funding enabled.
The Starknet Foundation appointment provides a second, differently structured contribution. The foundation’s 2022 materials described responsibilities including ecosystem support, research, education and governance development, with decisions shared across a board. Contemporary reporting corroborated Wall’s participation and the collective voting structure. This role placed him in an institution supporting an Ethereum scaling network, alongside his Bitcoin-facing work. It does not make him the inventor of STARK proofs, the operator of Starknet or the sole decision-maker for its foundation.
Why Katharos.ai Follows Eric Wall
Katharos.ai follows Wall because his work makes the social side of technical change unusually visible. A protocol proposal needs more than a specification to attract sustained review, developer experimentation and public understanding. Taproot Wizards demonstrates one attempt to connect those activities through company funding, recognizable artwork and a community identity. The editorial question is how effectively that attention translates into useful, reviewable work.
His career also offers a way to compare different approaches to financial infrastructure. The securities-depository thesis, Cinnober work, Arcane role and foundation appointment involve different answers to who coordinates a system and who carries its risks. Those experiences inform why his commentary receives attention, without making every conclusion authoritative. Katharos.ai evaluates each claim against the relevant code, documentation and independent analysis, especially when commercial interests and technical advocacy meet.
Areas to Follow
- Bitcoin upgrade proposals: the contents of OP_CAT-related specifications, technical review and any separately documented activation process. - Development output: software releases, testing and external developer support associated with Taproot Wizards’ stated engineering agenda. - Community participation: whether collectible-led engagement produces sustained contributions beyond a launch or event. - Governance work: clearly dated foundation responsibilities, decision-making rules and disclosures concerning overlapping organizational roles. - Public technical arguments: the evidence behind claims about scaling, custody, scripting capabilities and their security trade-offs.
Reporting Scope
This profile covers Wall’s public professional work, documented organizational roles and published technical advocacy. Historical roles are dated, and a company’s intentions are distinguished from released products. The founding-board appointment is established by the 2022 record; it is not used here to infer an uninterrupted current term. Personal disputes, private financial circumstances and unrelated aspects of his life fall outside this profile’s scope.
Areas of Influence
Exchanges & Infrastructure reflects Wall’s work on exchange technology and his involvement in debates about blockchain capabilities. Investment & Founders covers the establishment of Taproot Wizards and his historical investment-management role. Community, Media & Education captures his public explanations and the use of art and community activity to make technical questions accessible. These categories describe different channels of influence, rather than assessments of investment merit.
