Current Position & Biography
Giulia Scaffino is a PreDoc Researcher in TU Wien's Security and Privacy group, where her work covers cryptocurrency systems, blockchain interoperability, scalability and decentralized finance. The university lists her office in Vienna. Her own research page also describes a consulting role at Common Prefix and doctoral supervision by Matteo Maffei and Zeta Avarikioti. Before moving into computer-science research, she studied physics at the University of Pavia. Her present academic title is used here without implying that the doctorate has already been awarded.
Notable Contributions
Scaffino coauthored Sunfish: Reading Ledgers with Sparse Nodes with Karl Wüst, Deepak Maram, Alberto Sonnino and Lefteris Kokoris-Kogias. The paper formalizes a sparse node that follows a selected portion of blockchain state, checks the completeness of relevant transactions and re-executes them to assess validity. This sits between the resource demands of a full node and the more limited information provided by a light node. Sunfish is a proposed protocol instantiation evaluated in the paper; its reported savings should not be treated as a universal benchmark for every blockchain or application.
Why Katharos.ai Is Following Them
Katharos.ai follows this work because faster blockchains can shift costs onto the people who want to verify them. Application developers may not need the entire ledger, but they still need confidence that relevant events have not been omitted. The distinction between proving that an event occurred and proving that all relevant events were received is particularly important. Scaffino's research makes that distinction a concrete systems-design question.
Areas to Follow
We will follow how sparse-client approaches define the state they track, how they handle missing information, and what assumptions connect local verification to the wider chain. Another question is whether an application's resource savings remain meaningful as its own activity grows. Evaluation conditions, adversarial models and integration costs should remain visible alongside headline performance improvements.
Reporting Scope
Austria reflects her current Vienna research appointment and university office, not nationality or an inference from her earlier studies. This profile separates the institutional role from consulting work and attributes Sunfish to its coauthors. It does not equate a research prototype with a guarantee about any production service, token or investment outcome.
