Background & Biography
Wu graduated from Peking University in 2009 with dual bachelor’s degrees in economics and psychology. Bitdeer’s official biography also credits him with translating Bitcoin’s white paper into Mandarin in 2011. These early activities place his entry into crypto before the sector’s later institutional expansion. His subsequent career developed around the businesses needed to operate and finance blockchain networks.
In 2013, Wu co-founded Bitmain with Micree Zhan. Bitmain’s own history records that its first Bitcoin mining machine, the ANTMINER S1, entered mass production and reached customers that year. The company subsequently expanded its equipment range and launched ANTPOOL in 2014. Wu’s significance came from helping build a commercial hardware and mining business, rather than from inventing Bitcoin or personally designing every chip that its engineers produced.
He also became a visible participant in Bitcoin’s scaling debate. CoinDesk’s contemporaneous 2017 reporting documented his support for Bitcoin Cash and his involvement in discussions about how Bitcoin should accommodate more transactions. That history matters because mining businesses participate in a network whose software and operating rules are contested in public. It should not be treated as proof that Wu directs either network today.
Wu left Bitmain in January 2021. Bitdeer’s annual report states that he has held no management role there since, and records his Bitdeer chairmanship from January 2021 and chief executive appointment from March 2024. Matrixport, co-founded in 2019, adopted the BIT brand in March 2026 while retaining its legal entities and contractual arrangements. BIT’s current leadership page identifies Wu as chairman and John Ge as chief executive, an important distinction between his responsibilities at the two groups.
Notable Contributions
Bitdeer extends Wu’s mining-industry experience into a business that combines equipment development with computing operations. Its current listed parent, Bitdeer Technologies Group, is a Cayman Islands holding company with principal executive offices in Singapore. The underlying Bitdeer Technologies Holding Company was incorporated in November 2020; the listed parent was incorporated in December 2021 for the business combination. Nasdaq records BTDR’s market debut on April 14, 2023, following the Blue Safari transaction. Those dates describe different corporate milestones and should not be collapsed into a single founding date.
The SEALMINER range is a tangible part of that development. Bitdeer’s January 2026 operating update reported deployed A1, A2 and A3 machines, as well as external sales of A2 equipment. In April it launched the SEAL04-powered A4 series, including air-cooled and liquid-cooled models. The company specified 9.45 joules per terahash for the A4 Ultra Hydro, a manufacturer-stated performance figure rather than an independent field test. Together, the deployment record and product announcement distinguish an operating hardware program from an unfulfilled design roadmap.
The computing business has also moved beyond Bitcoin. In its August 2026 operating update, Bitdeer reported 4,328 deployed GPUs and identified its Malaysian A101 facility as live. Later in September, Bitdeer AI announced commitments covering more than 70% of the 21.7-megawatt A201 facility in Johor Bahru, with energization expected in the first quarter of 2027. The first disclosure describes installed computing resources; the second describes contracted demand for capacity still to come. This difference is central to assessing the company’s AI expansion.
BIT represents the financial-services side of Wu’s career. Its stated activities include trading, custody, asset and wealth management, liquidity and real-world asset tokenization. Services are delivered through separate entities, so the group name alone does not establish the regulatory status of any particular product. For example, Singapore’s Monetary Authority lists Fly Wing Technologies Pte. Ltd. as a Major Payment Institution, while BIT’s disclosures identify its permitted digital-payment-token service. That is an entity-specific authorization, not a personal licence for Wu or a blanket approval of the group’s offerings.
Why Katharos.ai Follows Jihan Wu
Wu offers a way to examine crypto through the practical demands of building businesses. His companies connect specialized equipment, powered sites, operating teams and access to financial services. Katharos.ai follows the interaction between these components because an improvement in one does not automatically solve constraints in the others. Faster chips still require deployment, and an attractive facility plan still requires construction and customers.
The scale of Bitdeer’s reported operations makes those questions consequential. Its August 2026 update recorded 79.9 exahashes per second of self-mining in company-owned data centers, alongside a separately reported co-mining business. These are company operating metrics, not measures of Wu’s personal cryptocurrency holdings. They provide evidence of activity while leaving profitability and capital efficiency to be assessed separately.
That separation is especially important during expansion. Bitdeer reported US$228.8 million of revenue and a US$92.3 million net loss for the second quarter of 2026. The figures show why production growth or a larger project pipeline should not stand in for a complete account of performance. The editorial interest is whether Wu’s businesses convert technical capability and commercial commitments into sustainable operations, with clear reporting on the cost of doing so.
Areas to Follow
- Hardware execution: SEALMINER production, deliveries, deployment and independently observed performance, with chip-level targets kept separate from complete-machine specifications. - Operating economics: electricity expenditure, equipment depreciation, financing costs and the relationship between computing capacity and realized revenue. - AI construction milestones: the transition from signed agreements and customer commitments to energized facilities, usable GPU capacity and recognized revenue, especially in Malaysia. - Capital allocation: how Bitdeer balances mining equipment, data-center construction and AI services as competing demands on funding and management attention. - Financial-services accountability: BIT’s operating entities, custody arrangements and product availability, using the relevant regulator’s register where a licensing claim is material.
Reporting Scope
Coverage concerns Wu’s public professional activities and the businesses in which his current role is verified. Corporate announcements are attributed to their issuing organizations; statements by another executive or research analyst are not automatically presented as Wu’s personal views. Historical Bitmain activity is dated, and later Bitmain decisions are not assigned to him merely because he was a co-founder.
Operating figures are identified by their reporting period and status, including when they are unaudited. Announced product specifications, future site capacity and expected contract revenue remain distinguishable from independently tested performance or completed delivery. Katharos.ai does not infer personal wealth from corporate financing, customer assets, valuation estimates or a company’s Bitcoin balance.
Areas of Influence
Wu’s clearest category is Exchanges & Infrastructure, through mining hardware, large-scale computing and the financial infrastructure surrounding digital assets. Investment & Founders reflects his role in establishing and leading several businesses with different commercial models. His earlier involvement in Bitcoin education and scaling discussions adds historical context, but his present influence is principally organizational and operational. Singapore is the primary professional market for this profile; the international reach of Bitdeer’s facilities and BIT’s services explains why his activities also matter beyond it.
