Current Position & Biography
Lucianna Kiffer is a Research Assistant Professor at IMDEA Networks in Spain, where she leads the Distributed Systems and Networks Group. She joined the institute in September 2024 after postdoctoral work at ETH Zurich. Her doctorate at Northeastern University examined causes of centralization in blockchain systems and possible mitigations. She also holds a mathematics and computer science degree from Tulane University. Her research combines measurement, analysis and protocol design to study blockchain networks.
Notable Contributions
Kiffer coauthored Nakamoto Consensus under Bounded Processing Capacity with Joachim Neu, Srivatsan Sridhar, Aviv Zohar and David Tse. The paper examines how finite processing resources change the relationship between blockchain performance and security. It studies congestion-based attacks and proposes a proof-of-stake variant intended to counter equivocation-related congestion. These results depend on the paper’s model; they should not be presented as a direct diagnosis of every operating blockchain.
Why Katharos.ai Is Following Them
Katharos.ai follows Kiffer because decentralization depends on the network and the machines participating in it, not only on consensus rules written in a specification. Increasing throughput can change who is able to keep up, and congestion may create opportunities that a simpler model overlooks. Her work helps frame practical questions about participation, resource requirements and the trade-offs behind performance claims.
Areas to Follow
Peer-to-peer blockchain networks, consensus under resource constraints, network measurement and centralization. Reporting will distinguish observations of deployed infrastructure from formal results and experimental prototypes. Attention will also go to how measurement methods define a participant, what remains invisible to a study and whether a proposed improvement changes the burden on smaller operators.
Reporting Scope
Spain identifies Kiffer’s current IMDEA Networks professional base in the Madrid region, not nationality. Earlier ETH Zurich affiliation is historical. Coverage focuses on published technical work and public research activity; it does not imply institutional endorsement of a digital asset or a recommendation to use any particular blockchain.
