Background & Biography
Theta Capital’s current team page identifies Marc de Kloe as a managing partner, alongside managing partners with different responsibilities across the firm. His public professional profile places him in Amsterdam, and Investment Officer’s March 2019 appointment report described his return to the Netherlands. These establish a public professional connection to the Dutch investment market. The firm was founded in 2001, well before he joined, so he should not be described as its founder.
De Kloe’s earlier work covered several parts of the financial industry. Theta’s fund documentation records an initial position as a foreign associate in private equity at Clifford Chance in Germany, followed later by work as global head of funds and alternatives at ABN AMRO Private Banking and chief operating officer of Adamas Asset Management in Hong Kong. The chronology supplies context for his present role: legal structures, selecting investment funds and operating an asset-management business all feature in the record. Those were earlier appointments, not concurrent current jobs.
The same documentation dates his arrival at Theta to 2019 and his directorship to December 2020. It describes responsibilities spanning strategy, operations, product development and client relations. The 2019 joining date is corroborated by contemporary independent reporting, and is used here in preference to a later conference biography that gives 2018. His current managing-partner title is separately supported by Theta’s live team page and the Global Blockchain Congress speaker roster.
Notable Contributions
De Kloe’s work sits within a manager-selection business. Theta Blockchain Ventures is a series of investment vehicles that allocate to specialist crypto-native venture funds, with additional selective investment activity. This means that the connection between an allocator and an underlying blockchain company can involve several decision-making layers. Explaining those layers is important when assessing his influence: helping develop a fund-of-funds platform is distinct from personally choosing, founding or running every company held by its underlying managers.
Theta’s published program describes selecting roughly eight to fifteen specialist managers per fund and using long-duration vehicles. Its public record lists US$171 million raised for the fourth vintage, closed in 2024. The next vintage, TBV-V, is presented with a US$200 million target; the reviewed material still contains an expected June 2026 final-close date. That stated expectation is not treated as proof that a final closing occurred. The profile makes no inference about the amount actually raised by that vehicle.
His contribution is also visible outside crypto. In September 2020, Alternatives Watch reported Theta’s launch of a distressed-credit fund of funds and quoted de Kloe explaining its intended role and manager mix. This is a dated example of him communicating an investment structure and the rationale for making a specialist strategy accessible through a multi-manager vehicle. It also shows the continuity between his broader alternatives background and the later blockchain allocation work. The proposed strategy and its advertised objectives are not evidence of subsequent performance.
Public education forms another part of the record. In January 2024, de Kloe and Theta colleague Ruud Smets appeared on Castle Island Ventures’ podcast to discuss blockchain funds of funds. The published episode description identifies institutional-investor education, manager capacity, co-investments and segmentation of the blockchain opportunity set as subjects. This provides a specific example of de Kloe explaining the allocator’s perspective to a crypto-focused audience, without requiring the attribution of every view discussed in a joint interview to him alone.
De Kloe has a separate, longstanding charitable role. Alternatives4Children identifies him among its board members and among the trustees of its UK chapter. The organization describes a model that draws support from investment-industry professionals to finance and monitor education projects. Its 2015 account names him as a co-founder and explains the emphasis on local involvement, financial reporting and sustainable projects. These are documented governance and community activities, separate from Theta’s commercial investment products.
Legends4Legends connects those professional and charitable networks. The Hedge Fund Journal’s account of the 2017 conference identified de Kloe as an Alternatives4Children co-founder and described the event’s collaboration with Theta while he was still at Adamas. Theta later reported that its 2024 conference raised more than US$160,000 for the charity. The amount is an organizer-reported fundraising result, not an independently audited measure of de Kloe’s personal contribution. The continuity across those events helps explain his role as a convenor as well as an investment professional.
Why Katharos.ai Follows Marc de Kloe
Katharos.ai follows de Kloe because institutional participation in blockchain depends partly on people who can translate between investment committees and specialist managers. The public evidence for his relevance includes the development and explanation of multi-manager structures, his earlier operational experience and his role in professional discussions. That makes him a useful subject for understanding how the sector is presented to allocators who are accustomed to more established alternatives.
The same position deserves careful scrutiny. A fund-of-funds structure introduces questions about fees, underlying exposure, valuation, liquidity and what the allocator can actually verify. Theta’s own materials acknowledge layered fees and the long investment horizon, while the TBV-V disclosure identifies the possibility of losing invested capital. Katharos.ai’s interest is therefore in the quality of information and implementation around institutional access, rather than the promotional language used to describe any strategy’s opportunity.
Areas to Follow
- Confirmed fund closings and changes to the Theta Blockchain Ventures program, separately from targets or anticipated dates. - De Kloe’s public explanations of manager selection, operational due diligence and institutional requirements. - How fund documentation addresses overlapping exposures, fees, liquidity and custody-related risks. - Verifiable outcomes from Legends4Legends and the continuing governance work of Alternatives4Children. - Changes in Theta’s leadership responsibilities that clarify his individual role within a collective investment process.
Reporting Scope
Coverage is limited to de Kloe’s professional appointments, public commentary and documented organizational work. Theta’s underlying investments and fundraising totals are not personal holdings or individual track records. Statements from the firm and conference organizers are identified as such, and dated forecasts are not rewritten as completed events. The profile does not assess the suitability of a fund for any reader, reproduce return projections or estimate personal wealth. Charitable service is relevant professional context and does not constitute validation of a commercial product.
Areas of Influence
Investment & Founders covers his alternative-investment leadership and role in an organization connecting allocators with blockchain venture managers. Community, Media & Education reflects his public discussions, conference involvement and charitable governance. The evidence supports influence through investment structures and professional networks. It does not establish that he controls blockchain protocols, sets regulatory policy or independently directs all of Theta’s investment decisions.
