Current Position & Biography
Markulf Kohlweiss is a Senior Lecturer in Security and Privacy at the University of Edinburgh and director of its ZK-Lab. His own academic page uses associate professor as an equivalent description of the British role. He holds a doctorate in cryptography from KU Leuven and previously worked at Microsoft Research Cambridge. His research connects cryptographic foundations, privacy-enhancing protocols and formal verification.
Notable Contributions
Kohlweiss coauthored Ouroboros Crypsinous: Privacy-Preserving Proof-of-Stake with Thomas Kerber, Aggelos Kiayias and Vassilis Zikas. The paper studies a private proof-of-stake ledger and models its security in a composable framework. To address adaptive attacks, it introduces a coin-evolution technique using succinct proofs and forward-secure encryption. These are results about a defined protocol and threat model, not an assurance that every implementation or proof-of-stake network has the same properties.
Why Katharos.ai Is Following Them
Katharos.ai follows Kohlweiss because blockchain privacy is not simply a question of hiding transaction fields. A protocol must explain how participants can validate activity, what information remains observable and what happens when an adversary compromises a participant over time. His work helps connect those questions to precise security arguments rather than broad claims of anonymity.
Areas to Follow
Privacy-preserving consensus, zero-knowledge proofs, cryptographic protocol verification and the relationship between models and implementations. Coverage will distinguish a theorem about a construction from evidence about deployed software. Particular attention will go to the assumptions behind privacy guarantees and to the ways protocol changes can affect those guarantees.
Reporting Scope
The United Kingdom identifies Kohlweiss’s Edinburgh professional base, not nationality. The institutional Senior Lecturer title is used rather than treating the equivalent wording on his personal page as a separate appointment. Coverage concerns public technical work and does not imply endorsement of a cryptocurrency, company or investment.
