Current Position & Biography
Orfeas Stefanos Thyfronitis Litos is a Research Fellow in Computer Science at the University of Warwick and a Decentralised Networks and Blockchain Scientist at Common Prefix, according to his current research page. Warwick's security-engineering group independently lists him among its current postdoctoral researchers. He completed his Edinburgh doctorate in cryptography and blockchains in 2021 under Aggelos Kiayias. His research spans payment channels, decentralized applications, voting and formal security analysis. The older Imperial College London affiliation on the company portrait page is not used as his current academic role.
Notable Contributions
With Grzegorz Fabiański and Rafał Stefański, he coauthored A Formally Verified Lightning Network. The paper uses the Why3 platform to combine a custom, simplified implementation of Lightning with explicit security goals and a machine-checkable proof. The result concerns safeguarding honest users' funds within that modeled system. It should not be read as proof that every Lightning software implementation, operational configuration or surrounding application is free of vulnerabilities. The simplification and implementation boundary are central to understanding the contribution.
Why Katharos.ai Is Following Them
Katharos.ai follows this work because the phrase formally verified can conceal an important question: exactly what was verified? Bringing an implementation, a specification and a proof into one workflow helps make that question answerable. For payment networks, it also draws attention to the difference between an intended security property and evidence that a particular system actually satisfies it. The profile treats such evidence as specific rather than universal.
Areas to Follow
We will follow how researchers document abstractions, whether verified components remain aligned with later protocol changes, and how proof artifacts can be examined by others. Another question is what remains outside the model, including user behavior, key management and integration code. The value of a formal result is clearer when those boundaries are explicit rather than hidden behind a general security label.
Reporting Scope
United Kingdom reflects his current Warwick research appointment, not inferred citizenship. The current own-site role is corroborated by Warwick's group roster, while the company page supplies an authentic portrait and additional research context. The cited Lightning result is collaborative and scoped to its custom simplified system; no assurance about a reader's funds or a commercial product is implied.
