Background & Biography
Reinaldo Rabelo’s route into digital assets began in the legal and operational structures of established finance. A presentation he delivered at FGV EPGE in 2019 identifies his legal training at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and earlier work in tax law, followed by legal and compliance responsibilities associated with GRV, Sascar, Cetip and B3. This gives his later crypto work a particular perspective: the question is not only what a blockchain can record, but how ownership, obligations and organizational responsibility are defined around it.
ABRASCA’s 2021 speaker biography records almost a decade as an executive at Cetip, covering risk, compliance and legal work, and involvement in its Foresee innovation program. It also states that he joined Mercado Bitcoin in 2017 and led the project that became MB Digital Assets. That sequence places him among the executives who helped develop the business after its original founding. This profile does not present him as one of the people who originally launched Mercado Bitcoin in 2013.
His present role is specifically European. Rabelo’s own public professional profile identifies him as CEO of MB Euro from July 2025 and places him in the Lisbon area. September 2026 reporting by Startups independently describes him as Mercado Bitcoin’s CEO in Europe, while Portuguese business coverage also identifies his regional leadership. Portugal is consequently used as the principal current professional market, with Brazil retained as central to his career and the organization’s operations. This is a professional classification rather than an inference about nationality or private residence.
Notable Contributions
Rabelo’s work on MB Digital Assets is an important part of the shift from exchange trading toward financial instruments represented digitally. In a December 2019 article, he described the business’s effort to register and tokenize alternative assets and contractual rights. The article explained a commercial thesis: making assets accessible to a wider set of investors while changing the intermediation around their sale. It is evidence of his involvement and thinking at that time, not independent proof of the returns, liquidity or risk reduction claimed for any token.
The distinction between an asset and its digital representation matters to assessing this contribution. A tokenized contractual right still depends on the substance of that right, the party obliged to perform and the process for enforcing it. Easier digital distribution can change who has access, but it cannot by itself establish the quality of the underlying investment. Katharos.ai’s interest in Rabelo’s tokenization work therefore includes the legal and operational design surrounding products, alongside the technology used to distribute them.
Mercado Bitcoin’s growth also took place within a larger corporate financing story. Reuters reported in July 2021 that SoftBank invested US$200 million through a Series B, with parent group 2TM stating a valuation of US$2.1 billion. The announced purposes included scaling operations, expanding offerings and investing in infrastructure. This is a milestone for the business in which Rabelo held a leadership role, not a personal fundraising total or a current valuation. It also illustrates the resources and expectations associated with moving from an exchange toward a broader financial-services organization.
Portugal became an important part of that expansion. In an April 2026 interview with DN Brasil, Rabelo said the group acquired control of Portuguese company Criptoloja in 2022 and completed the ownership acquisition in 2025. He described the existing Portuguese team as important to the development of the operation. The resulting strategy aims to connect experience from Brazil with opportunities in Europe, but the interview also made clear that broader market access depended on regulatory authorization rather than the acquisition alone.
Two 2026 product examples show the direction of that strategy. DN Brasil reported Vera, a WhatsApp-based interface through which customers could interact with the company’s digital-asset services. In June, Jornal Económico described the company’s launch of a euro-to-real transfer service with receipt through Brazil’s Pix system. Both examples focus on familiar customer tasks and interfaces. Reported convenience, speed and cost advantages remain company claims, and a launch report does not establish that every feature remains available under the same conditions today.
That qualification is especially important for the European operation. Mercado Bitcoin Portugal’s MiCA notice, dated 23 June 2026 and checked on 6 October, identifies the applicant as Smart Token Lda. and says the application remains under review. Its FAQ states that opening new accounts and accepting new deposits are temporarily unavailable, while existing customers retain essential access including withdrawals and asset transfers. August reporting by Broadcast also described a pending Portuguese authorization decision. The profile therefore treats full European expansion as an objective subject to authorization and operating conditions, without implying wrongdoing or attributing the regulatory outcome personally to Rabelo.
Why Katharos.ai Follows Reinaldo Rabelo
Katharos.ai follows Rabelo because his responsibilities bring several difficult implementation questions together. Tokenization needs enforceable rights, a trading venue needs operational reliability, and international expansion needs a clearly defined regulatory basis. Experience in one market may inform work in another, but it does not remove the need to satisfy the requirements of that market. His European role provides a concrete setting in which to examine those differences.
His public commentary also connects the Brazilian and European discussions. In September 2026, Startups reported his view that Brazil’s transition to its new crypto framework would open a continuing period of adjustment rather than end the policy debate. The relevant point is his emphasis on implementation, including the treatment of activities that do not fit neatly into an exchange’s original business model. This is an industry participant’s assessment, not an official interpretation issued by a regulator.
The combination of legal background and product development makes him useful to follow, but it should be evaluated through specific evidence. A new tokenized product can be assessed through its documentation and investor rights; a payment service through total cost and successful settlement; an expansion through actual permissions and available services. Katharos.ai’s interest is in those measurable developments. Professional experience and public advocacy are context, not substitutes for demonstrating how a service works.
Areas to Follow
- Portuguese authorization: an official decision on Smart Token Lda.’s MiCA application and verified changes to the currently published service restrictions. - European expansion: evidence of operating permissions and live services in additional markets, separately from targets or announcements. - Tokenized assets: the legal rights, underlying counterparties, redemption conditions and disclosures attached to individual products. - Cross-border payments: actual availability and complete transaction costs for euro–real transfers, including the final payment to recipients. - Customer interfaces: how tools such as Vera make authorization, transaction confirmation and risk understandable. - Regulatory participation: Rabelo’s public arguments and their relationship to rules ultimately adopted by the relevant authorities.
Reporting Scope
This profile addresses Rabelo’s public professional activities verified through 6 October 2026. It distinguishes the Brazilian business, the 2TM parent-group financing and the Portuguese operating entity. Older chief-executive descriptions are placed in their historical context, and product announcements are not treated as proof of unrestricted current availability. Company statements on application status are attributed to the company; the article does not replace a regulator’s register or a product’s contractual documentation.
Areas of Influence
Rabelo’s main categories are Exchanges & Infrastructure and Policy & Regulation, reflecting his executive work and public engagement with the rules surrounding digital assets. Stablecoins & Payments captures the operation’s cross-border service development. Investment & Founders covers entrepreneurial and asset-tokenization activity without claiming that he founded Mercado Bitcoin at inception. His influence is best assessed at the point where technological possibilities meet the practical duties of a financial-services operator.
