Background & Biography
Ammous’s training spans engineering, development and economics. His professional biography lists a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the American University of Beirut, a master’s degree in development management from the London School of Economics and a doctorate in sustainable development from Columbia University. This background preceded the books and courses through which he became known in the Bitcoin community.
He taught economics at the Lebanese American University from 2009 to 2019, according to his current biography. The university’s archived 2015–16 academic catalog independently records him as an assistant professor in its economics department. That academic appointment is a historical part of his career; his current public work is presented through his independent publishing and educational platform.
His public LinkedIn professional profile identifies Jordan and Saifedean.com. This provides the professional-geography basis for the profile, rather than an inference from nationality or from his earlier employment in Lebanon. His audience and public teaching extend internationally. Invitations to speak or teach in another country do not, by themselves, establish a different professional base.
Notable Contributions
The Bitcoin Standard: The Decentralized Alternative to Central Banking, published by Wiley in 2018, is the central work connecting Ammous to digital assets. It places Bitcoin within a history of monetary technologies, moving from commodity money and precious metals to central banking and digital settlement. Ammous argues that the difficulty of increasing a monetary asset’s supply is important to its usefulness across time. He treats Bitcoin’s issuance constraints as a reason to consider it a form of hard money.
The book’s argument is broader than an explanation of transactions or mining. It links monetary arrangements to saving, investment and time preference, meaning the weight people place on present consumption relative to future consumption. Its later chapters examine Bitcoin as a store of value, a settlement network and a possible monetary standard. Those are the author’s proposed economic interpretations and applications, rather than assurances about purchasing power or the future monetary system.
The book also became a subject of substantive criticism. In a 2018 Cato Journal review, Tyler Whirty credited Ammous with bringing monetary concepts to a wider audience while challenging his treatment of monetary history and the breadth of the social outcomes he attributed to hard money. Whirty also identified unresolved questions about deflation and Bitcoin’s long-run incentives. That response illustrates both the book’s place in the debate and the need to separate its influential argument from an economic consensus.
Ammous extended his critique in The Fiat Standard, published in 2021. His description of the book examines government money, credit creation and the institutions supporting the existing monetary system. It compares those arrangements with Bitcoin and discusses scenarios in which they coexist or compete. The work is useful for understanding his intellectual position: he applies the language of monetary technology to banking and credit, while arguing that monetary incentives have effects beyond finance. These claims remain attributable to the author.
Principles of Economics, published in 2023, broadens his educational work beyond a single digital asset. The associated course has 18 lectures organized around subjects including human action, value, labor, property, capital, trade, money and credit. Its published reading list draws heavily on Austrian-school writers such as Ludwig von Mises, Carl Menger and Friedrich Hayek. The course makes the theoretical framework behind his Bitcoin commentary more explicit and allows readers to examine the premises as well as the conclusions.
His Bitcoin course follows a more focused path through monetary history and the mechanics of the network. Its syllabus discusses transactions, supply, difficulty adjustment, mining, scalability and competing blockchain uses. It also develops his arguments about money and time preference. Courses and discussion seminars turn his books into a continuing teaching activity, while his platform offers an avenue for questions and engagement with students. Course availability is evidence of an educational offering, not an independently verified measure of learning outcomes.
His teaching has also reached organized Bitcoin training outside his own platform. Diario El Salvador reported that he addressed CUBO+ students in May 2023, discussing money and Bitcoin with participants in the program supported by the country’s National Bitcoin Office. In February 2026, the newspaper again identified him among the instructors opening a new CUBO+ cohort. These reports establish specific educational activity in El Salvador without making him the operator of the program or establishing a current government appointment.
Ammous also has a documented corporate advisory connection. Africa Bitcoin Corporation appointed him Bitcoin Strategic Advisor in December 2025, and Financial Mail identified him as its strategic adviser in June 2026. The appointment notice defines a non-executive, conceptual role providing periodic economic and treasury-related input to management. It explicitly excludes decision-making or fiduciary authority and a board appointment. This brings his monetary ideas into discussion with a listed company’s management without making him responsible for its investment decisions or establishing that the company’s strategy will succeed.
The Bitcoin Standard Podcast provides a further route for applying his framework to current issues. One recent episode, “Can Stablecoins Save the Dollar?”, considers claims about stablecoin demand, US public finances and monetary conditions. The episode description identifies concerns he raises about financing structures and changes in demand for government debt. This shows that his commentary addresses developments surrounding Bitcoin as well as Bitcoin itself; it does not establish that his analysis is an official assessment of fiscal sustainability.
Why Katharos.ai Follows Saifedean Ammous
Katharos.ai follows Ammous because digital-asset adoption is influenced by explanations of what money is and why people might choose a particular monetary system. His books, courses and public teaching supply an identifiable channel through which Bitcoin’s economic case is presented and contested. His importance to this directory rests on that educational and intellectual role.
The distinction between influence and correctness is central. A widely discussed monetary argument can affect how readers evaluate digital assets without resolving disputes about history, credit, volatility or economic policy. Following Ammous therefore includes examining the evidence offered for his claims and the serious criticism they attract, alongside the development of his educational work.
Areas to Follow
Coverage will follow new books, course material and podcast discussions that materially develop his views on Bitcoin, banking and monetary institutions. His work on stablecoins is relevant where it connects digital-asset demand to the existing financial system. Public teaching initiatives also offer a concrete record of how those ideas enter educational settings.
When his arguments include predictions, useful questions concern their assumptions, time horizons and observable outcomes. Statements about an asset’s scarcity should be distinguished from claims about its future price, adoption or purchasing power.
Reporting Scope
This profile covers Ammous’s public professional work, published arguments and documented educational activity. It treats past university employment and international teaching engagements as dated facts. It does not present him as a current public officeholder. Book descriptions and course materials establish what he argues and teaches; independent reviews provide context rather than a blanket endorsement or rejection of his work.
Areas of Influence
Ammous’s principal influence channels are Bitcoin monetary education, publishing and public economic debate. His contribution is the development and dissemination of a particular account of digital money, supported by a teaching platform and international speaking activity. This is an intellectual and educational role, distinct from maintaining Bitcoin’s software or controlling the network. Readers should evaluate his positions as arguments and should not treat inclusion in this directory as an investment recommendation.
