Background & Biography
Sasha Ivanov’s public professional identity is closely tied to Waves, the blockchain platform he founded in 2016, and to Units.Network, which he introduced as a new direction for the ecosystem in 2024. His public LinkedIn profile lists Units Network and Dubai, supporting the United Arab Emirates as a professional base for this profile. The geography describes a public business connection. It does not establish citizenship, immigration status or private residence.
Before Waves, Ivanov worked on cryptocurrency services including Coinomat, which CoinDesk’s reporting dates to 2013. That earlier venture addressed the practical problem of moving between digital assets and conventional money. Waves expanded his focus from a single service to the infrastructure on which other issuers and developers could operate. Its founding proposition centered on making token creation and transfer accessible without requiring every project to construct a new blockchain.
Waves subsequently developed a distinct technical stack rather than adopting Ethereum’s execution environment wholesale. Its documentation describes native asset issuance, the Ride language, leased proof of stake and developer tools maintained by both the core team and the wider community. Those are collective engineering outputs. Ivanov’s founder position and public advocacy are important, but they do not make every component his individual invention or every application a company he directly controls.
His organizational roles also need to be distinguished. A March 2022 announcement for the separate US-focused Waves Labs business described him as founder and lead developer of Waves, taking an advisory role to the new company. That historical statement is not evidence that he is its current chief executive. The verified present-day description here follows his continuing founder association, Units.Network work and named contribution to a Waves protocol paper.
Notable Contributions
Waves’ asset model made issuance a native blockchain operation. Its documentation distinguishes assets with additional scripted rules from ordinary tokens, while Ride provides a language for account scripts and decentralized applications. This architecture gives developers another set of choices about how application behavior is expressed and checked. The relevant contribution is a usable alternative design, rather than a claim that creating a token automatically creates a sound business or valuable financial instrument.
The network’s consensus and transaction-processing approach is another part of that design. In leased proof of stake, holders can lease stake to a node without transferring ownership of the underlying tokens. Waves-NG separates key blocks from a continuing sequence of microblocks, allowing transactions to be incorporated between changes in block producer. The official technical material credits the underlying Bitcoin-NG approach. Published throughput targets should not be confused with independently measured performance under every workload.
Ivanov’s later work placed greater emphasis on how communities allocate authority. Power Protocol was announced in December 2022 as a framework intended to improve on simple token-weighted voting. Independent reporting described a model linking community-defined performance measures with rewards and penalties. His 2023 writing explored how existing projects might delegate governance to such a framework. These are specific design ideas; they do not establish that every Waves-related project adopted them or that concentration of influence was eliminated.
Units.Network applies the ecosystem’s technical resources to a different challenge: connecting Ethereum-compatible execution with Waves-based coordination. In his May 2024 ForkLog interview, Ivanov described using Waves as a foundational layer and enabling additional chains through restaking and shared infrastructure. The interview reported an April testnet and a planned mainnet timetable. Those dates are useful historical evidence of development and intent, but a forecast in an interview is not proof that a launch occurred on schedule.
Current documentation supplies a stronger basis for describing what became available. The Unit Zero documentation identifies separate mainnet and testnet environments, publishes mainnet connection parameters and provides guides for deploying applications. It also describes Unit1 specifically as a test network used to demonstrate support for multiple chains. A documented mainnet is a meaningful implementation milestone. It is not evidence that the earlier ambition of hundreds of production networks has been achieved.
Unit Zero’s node architecture separates execution from consensus. Its documentation describes an execution client that processes Ethereum-compatible transactions and a Waves node with a consensus extension that coordinates block production. The design therefore depends on both the execution environment and its connection to the underlying validator system. Compatibility with familiar Ethereum tools can reduce migration work, while consensus participation, software maintenance and cross-chain behavior still require their own assessment.
The native UNIT0 token is described as serving transaction-fee and governance functions. Documentation provides procedures for submitting and voting on proposals, as well as an explanation of ecosystem incentives. These functions show how technical infrastructure and community administration are intended to fit together. They should be examined through participation, concentration and actual decisions, rather than assuming that the presence of a governance token makes an organization broadly representative.
Ivanov is also a co-author of Improving Finality in Waves: Protocol Enhancements and Guarantees, alongside Alexey Kiselev and Sergey Nazarov, each listed with a Waves Foundation affiliation. The paper proposes a more explicit set of participating block generators and additional endorsements to make finality easier to determine. Finality concerns when a transaction can be treated as settled, which matters for applications that depend on predictable confirmation. The paper is evidence of a technical contribution and proposal, not sufficient evidence of network-wide activation.
The implementation record now goes beyond the paper. Waves’ April 2026 version 1.6.2 release supplied mainnet-capable deterministic-finality code and reported that feature 25 had activated on testnet. A mainnet node-status check on 6 October 2026, at height 5,432,837, listed the feature as implemented in node software but still in voting status. Release, testnet activation and mainnet activation are therefore separate milestones. This is a collective engineering result associated with the research, not proof that Ivanov alone wrote or deployed the implementation; behavior under disruption and wider adoption still require assessment.
The Waves ecosystem also experienced financial disruption. Contemporaneous reporting by The Block records that USDN lost its dollar peg in 2022 and that a liquidity crisis at Vires Finance prevented users from withdrawing funds. In an August 1, 2023 essay, Ivanov acknowledged stuck liquidity and described resolving it as a priority. These dated records establish the crisis and proposed response, but do not verify the subsequent repayment outcome for every affected user. Later technical milestones should therefore be assessed separately from the outcome of those recovery commitments.
Why Katharos.ai Follows Sasha Ivanov
Katharos.ai follows Ivanov because his work spans asset issuance, application infrastructure, cross-chain design and community governance. The continuity makes it possible to compare successive attempts to solve similar problems: reducing the effort required to launch applications while coordinating a network of participants with different incentives. It also makes careful attribution important. The founder, the protocol, an application and a separately operated business should not be treated as interchangeable.
His influence is best evaluated through implementation evidence and accountable decision-making. Documentation, released software, validator participation and independently observable use are stronger indicators than an ambitious launch interview alone. Coverage of the wider ecosystem must also consider its financial and operational history. Technical creativity is not a warranty of product safety, investment performance or the completion of every earlier commitment.
Areas to Follow
- Mainnet voting, eventual activation and independent assessment of Waves’ released finality implementation. - Unit Zero’s production operation, validator participation and application usage. - The distinction between additional-chain test environments and deployed networks. - Power Protocol and ecosystem governance participation, incentives and concentration. - Public reporting on legacy financial commitments and the outcomes of recovery measures.
Reporting Scope
This profile covers public professional roles, technical designs and selected project milestones checked through 6 October 2026. Founder status is distinguished from a current executive office, and published proposals are distinguished from deployed functionality. Geographic metadata reflects a public professional connection. Technical progress is assessed separately from financial performance, and this profile should be read alongside reporting on the ecosystem’s wider operating history.
Areas of Influence
Investment & Founders reflects Ivanov’s creation of Waves and Units.Network. Exchanges & Infrastructure covers asset issuance, execution environments, consensus and interoperability. Community, Media & Education reflects his governance proposals, public technical explanations and role in ecosystem discussion. His influence lies in shaping systems and the conversation around their coordination, with outcomes requiring continuing scrutiny.
