Current Position & Biography
Srinivas Devadas, also known as Srini Devadas, is the Edwin Sibley Webster Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT. His personal faculty page places his office at MIT CSAIL on Vassar Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and identifies applied cryptography, computer security and computer architecture as his research interests.
His relevance to blockchain research is not simply that cryptography appears somewhere in his work. Catena examines whether an existing cryptocurrency network can help prevent a service from presenting contradictory histories to different readers. That question connects ledger security to the reliability of information outside a payment system.
Notable Contributions
Devadas coauthored Catena: Efficient Non-equivocation via Bitcoin with Alin Tomescu. The design represents an application log as a chain of Bitcoin transactions using OP_RETURN statements. Producing conflicting log histories requires defeating the underlying protection against double spending. Thin clients verify block headers and compact proofs instead of downloading every transaction. The paper also describes a Java implementation and an extension to the CONIKS public-key directory. Its guarantees depend on Bitcoin security and on clients obtaining the correct initial log transaction; the work does not make arbitrary server statements true.
Why Katharos.ai Is Following Them
Katharos.ai is following this work because transparency systems need a credible answer to the question of who can change the story. A shared ledger can constrain inconsistent histories without becoming an oracle of factual accuracy. Keeping those two properties separate is essential when evaluating blockchain claims in identity, software distribution or institutional recordkeeping.
The research also illustrates why verification cost matters. An assurance that requires every reader to run expensive infrastructure may be inaccessible to the people who most need to check a service.
Areas to Follow
Follow the practical cost of auditing public logs, the interaction between confirmation policies and application risk, and the way systems authenticate their initial trust anchors. Another useful question is whether a deployment documents precisely which failures its ledger witness can detect and which failures remain outside the model.
Reporting Scope
United States reflects the professional office listed on his current faculty page, not a citizenship inference. The profile distinguishes a published research design from a claim of universal deployment or current performance. The historical solo portrait is not presented as a recent photograph.
