Background & Biography
Turpin entered digital assets with experience in conventional financial markets. Wintermute’s executive biography identifies earlier work at Optiver and subsequently with London hedge funds and family offices, alongside an MSc from EDHEC Business School. An investment account published by Lightspeed in 2020 also documents his background as an Optiver derivatives trader and entrepreneur. That combination is relevant to his later role: a market-making business needs counterparties and commercial relationships as well as pricing technology.
Wintermute was founded in 2017. Historical materials, including Lightspeed’s investment announcement and Turpin’s 2022 interview with the 1inch Network, described him as co-founder and head of business development. The current executive page uses Co-founder, while identifying Jonathan Chan as Global Head of Business Development and Partnerships. This profile therefore uses the current founder title rather than assuming Turpin continues to hold every executive responsibility recorded in earlier interviews.
His professional geography also changed. Bloomberg reporting carried by The Straits Times recorded his planned move from London to Singapore in July 2023. His current public professional profile identifies Singapore and includes Wintermute’s account of his involvement with its Asia-Pacific team. Singapore is consequently used here as a professional base, while London remains important to the company’s origins and his career. Neither reference establishes nationality or private residence.
Notable Contributions
Turpin’s clearest contribution is helping build the commercial reach of a specialist digital-asset liquidity provider. Lightspeed’s early account described a founding team transferring established market-making experience into crypto. By January 2021, The Block reported a completed $20 million Series B led by Lightspeed, with additional investors including Pantera and Fidelity’s Avon Ventures. The report connected that financing to the company’s balance sheet, expansion and developing OTC business. This was company financing, not a fund managed by Turpin for outside investors.
Wintermute’s operating model helps explain the significance of that growth. Its trading documentation describes connected teams working across centralized exchanges and decentralized markets, supported by proprietary technology, quantitative research and its own capital. The system combines market signals, pricing models and connectivity across venues rather than relying on a single exchange’s order book. Turpin’s founder role belongs within that wider organization; the available evidence does not establish that he personally designed its algorithms. The technological work is attributed to the company and its trading and engineering teams.
An important product milestone was Wintermute NODE, announced in April 2022. The platform gave institutions and qualified individuals electronic access to the firm’s principal OTC liquidity through a browser interface and an API. It followed an OTC API launched in June 2021 and brought price discovery, execution and exposure monitoring into a common interface. The historical announcement is evidence of a launched product, rather than simply an intention to build one. Its original asset and venue counts are not presented here as current coverage. The service later added NODE Insights, which Wintermute announced as live for counterparties on 17 September 2025.
Turpin also helped articulate the firm’s interest in decentralized finance. In his July 2022 1inch interview, he described preparations for a larger share of trading to occur through DeFi and discussed how difficult funding conditions could change opportunities for young projects. These were his observations at that point in the market cycle. They are useful for understanding his commercial outlook without treating his confidence, forecasts or descriptions of the firm’s finances as independently verified outcomes. The original interview date matters even though the publisher subsequently updated the page.
Wintermute Ventures provides another route through which the founder’s work intersects with emerging businesses. The current ventures page includes Turpin on its team and describes early-stage investments made with proprietary funds. It also identifies trading integrations, governance assistance and collaboration with in-house builders as forms of support available to portfolio projects. Such assistance can connect a startup’s financing with the practical problem of establishing a functioning market. This does not mean an investment automatically guarantees liquidity, adoption or a future token listing.
The group’s development now reaches beyond its original crypto trading arrangements. In August 2026, Wintermute announced that its affiliate Wintermute USA LLC had obtained SEC broker-dealer registration and FINRA membership for a proprietary-trading and ETP-services business. That announcement describes a specific U.S. entity and includes the ability to act as an authorized participant for exchange-traded products for its own account. It is a corporate milestone relevant to the business Turpin co-founded, rather than evidence that he led the registration process or holds a U.S. regulatory position.
Why Katharos.ai Follows Yoann Turpin
Katharos.ai follows Turpin because liquidity provision links parts of crypto that are often discussed separately. Exchanges need tradable markets, institutions need execution, and new protocols need counterparties willing to use their infrastructure. His career provides a practical perspective on those connections, particularly the transition from established trading firms to crypto-native markets. His documented business-development history makes partnerships and market access more informative subjects to follow than unsupported claims about personal trading performance.
His Singapore-facing work also makes him relevant to the international organization of the industry. A trading group can serve several markets through distinct teams, products and legal entities, even while sharing technology and commercial relationships. Following those distinctions helps explain where institutional activity is developing and what infrastructure is actually available. The important evidence is the implementation of products and partnerships, rather than the prestige of a conference appearance or the size of an announced ambition.
Areas to Follow
- Asian market development: Turpin’s public professional work in Singapore and documented partnerships involving Wintermute’s regional business. - OTC infrastructure: changes to NODE, execution access and settlement workflows, with product availability checked against current documentation. - DeFi connectivity: integrations showing how the trading business interacts with protocols and decentralized liquidity pools. - Venture support: disclosed investments and practical contributions to portfolio projects, distinguishing company capital from external fund commitments. - Cross-market expansion: the activities of particular Wintermute entities as traditional securities and digital-asset markets develop alongside one another.
Reporting Scope
This profile covers Turpin’s public career, founder role and documented business contributions through 6 October 2026. Company milestones are identified as collective work and are not assigned to him as sole creator. Historical funding, interview observations and product announcements retain their dates. No claim is made about his personal holdings, wealth, investment returns or undisclosed management responsibilities.
Regulatory descriptions require particular precision. Wintermute’s disclosures distinguish its England-and-Wales trading company and Singapore derivatives entity from the U.S. broker-dealer affiliate. UK registration under the cryptoasset anti-money-laundering regime should not be described as unrestricted financial-services authorization. The existence of one registered affiliate also does not establish regulatory coverage for every group product, jurisdiction or counterparty.
Areas of Influence
Exchanges & Infrastructure is Turpin’s principal category, reflecting Wintermute’s trading, OTC execution and liquidity connections. Investment & Founders captures his role in building the business and his association with its venture activity. His public interviews provide additional insight into market development, but the strongest basis for following him remains the infrastructure and commercial relationships documented around Wintermute.
