Current Position & Biography
Yossi Gilad is an associate professor in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s School of Engineering and Computer Science. His work examines how distributed systems can remain secure while serving many users. His earlier research appointments included MIT, Boston University and IBM; he earned his doctorate at Bar-Ilan University. The current Hebrew University listing, rather than the older title on his Boston University biography, establishes the role used here.
Notable Contributions
Gilad coauthored the 2017 Algorand paper with Rotem Hemo, Silvio Micali, Georgios Vlachos and Nickolai Zeldovich. That work investigated cryptocurrency consensus using Byzantine agreement and verifiable random selection of participants. Its experiments and security model belong to the research described in the paper; they should not be treated as measurements or guarantees for today’s deployed network. His university publication list also includes the 2025 paper Asynchronous Algorand, showing continued research on agreement protocols.
Why Katharos.ai Is Following Them
Katharos.ai follows Gilad because the practical meaning of decentralization depends partly on the cost and reliability of agreement. A system can offer an appealing interface yet still face difficult questions about communication overhead, malicious participants and recovery after network disruption. Research at this layer helps readers evaluate the assumptions behind blockchain infrastructure rather than relying only on transaction-speed claims.
Areas to Follow
Distributed consensus, blockchain scalability, network security and the relationship between formal analysis and experimental evaluation. Reporting will distinguish a proposed protocol from an implementation, a benchmark from a production outcome, and a paper’s assumptions from the conditions encountered by users.
Reporting Scope
Israel identifies Gilad’s current university-based professional location, not a citizenship inference. Coverage focuses on published technical work and its relevance to digital-asset infrastructure. This profile does not assign him a current executive position at Algorand or imply that he endorses any token, investment or commercial deployment.
